Cadillac is jumping on General Motors' own electric car bandwagon. According to a report in the Detroit News, the company has green lighted the battery-powered Converj coupe, first shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The edgy 2+2 concept features the same extended-range electric powertrain as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, though details on the supposed production version have not yet been revealed. It's likely, however, that as a member of the Cadillac brand, the Converj will feature more luxury and performance than its mainstream cousin.

In fact, the concept version was designed to use a magnetically-adjustable suspension similar to the one on the Cadillac CTS-V sports sedan and 205 mph Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Adding to the speculation, in a recent interview with Foxnews.com, GM Vice Chairmain Bob Lutz said not to "discount" the possibility of a high performance version of the Volt's powertrain. A release date for the Converj has not been set, but it isn't expected to hit the road before the Volt goes on sale in late 2010.

Question: Regarding rental of a large lorry

Hi guys,

I need to rent a lorry, but this is the first time I'm doing it, so I wanted to ask some questions, hope anyone who has rented a commercial vehicle before can help me!

1. Just to double check, Lorries such as Toyota Dyna and Nissan Cabstar will need drivers with Class 3 license right? [And has passed for 1 year or more]

2. I heard that fuel level is usually very low when we receive the lorry, so I guess if I rent it, my first destination would most probably need to head to the petrol kiosk to top up? Anyone can help verify this?

3. Are reservations done way before hand or I can just call up random companies a few days before the actual date that I need it? [I asked this because when I asked around most weren't enthusiastic to give me a reply on reservations]

4. When I rent vehicles, what do I usually need to leave with the rental company? IC? passport?

Lastly, anyone has any recommendations on some lorry rental companies that I can approach?

Of course, please direct me if you actually found a thread relating to this, if not, I've searched through at least 10 pages of threads already.

P.s. As you can see I'm pretty much noob at this. So if you have any other tips just let me know too! I will thank everyone who helps me!
Isn’t the endless stream of auto shows great? We’re still in the midst of SEMA, but details on the new Porsche Boxster Spyder being debuted at the LA Auto Show have made their way to the forefront. The slim Boxster offering cuts about 176 pounds of fat, bringing total weight down to 2,811 lbs. The light-duty fabric top limits the new Porsche’s versatility in climates where temperatures regularly duck below 50 and clouds converge daily, but it’s certainly a playful little convertible for places where the sun isn’t shy. The Spyder features a 320 hp 3.4 liter six cylinder paired with a seven-speed PDK dual clutch transmission. It hits 60 in 4.6 seconds and offers 25.3 mpg fuel economy. It will be available in February of next year with a starting sticker of $61,200.

Some cars today have as many as 20 airbags – in the front, on the sides, to shield heads, even airbags to protect knees. Now, Ford is going one step further. The automaker has announced it will become the first automaker to offer seatbelt airbags for backseat passengers. The airbags will appear first in the company's next general Ford Explorer – due out in about a year. The airbags will be sewn into the shoulder portion of the rear seat belts – and will deploy outward and sidewise, like a small tubular pillow. Ford says these seatbelt airbags deploy more slowly and with much less force than frontal airbags. That, they say, makes it safe for a rear seat occupant, from a young child to an elderly passenger.

Ford Vice President Sue Cischke told ABC News, "This marries two life-saving technologies – the airbag technology and the seatbelts." "We do a lot of testing in all different configurations to make sure whatever we introduce is safe," Cischke said. She added that Ford even tested to see what would happen if a child's head was resting on the seatbelt when the bag deployed, "We've done testing with kids sleeping, a dummy simulating a child sleeping, just to make sure that it works under all different conditions." Ford says it also tested the new airbag with child car seats and booster seats. "They (parents) don't need to worry, because we're doing this to protect kids,"said Cischke.
DETROIT/FRANKFURT, Nov 3 (Reuters) - General Motors reversed course on Tuesday by abandoning a long-expected sale of its Opel to a group led by Canadian auto supplier Magna and opting to keep the European unit after a year of uncertainty and high-stakes political negotiations. GM said improving business conditions and the strategic importance of Opel had prompted the unexpected move by its 13-member board of directors appointed in the wake of its own bankruptcy just four months ago.

The decision represented a setback for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, raised the risk of conflict with Opel's European unions and left open the question of how GM would finance its plan to go it alone by restructuring Opel. The move also marked a startling shift in direction from the course for Opel endorsed by GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson, who two weeks ago had said a sale of the European unit was the most likely outcome. German's government had lobbied hard for the Magna deal and on Tuesday night said it wanted GM to repay 1.5 billion ($2.2 billion) in bridge financing extended by German state banks.

"The government regrets the decision of the General Motors board to restructure Opel itself and to keep it in the group," government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said in a statement. GM said it expected that restructuring Opel on its own would cost about 3 billion euros ($4.41 billion), costs expected to cover job cuts and plant closures. Senior GM executives were caught unaware by the move by the automaker's board, led by plainspoken former telecommunications executive Ed Whitacre, an outsider who became the face of the new GM in a recent TV ad blitz in the United States. Whitacre, whose appointment was vetted by the Obama administration, has shown a hard-charging streak, showing up at GM factories unannounced and putting tough questions to management, people familiar with his tenure have said.

Hyundai will be present at the SEMA auto event with the Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec that is very tuner-friendly. What we mean by tuner-friendly is the fact that this variant will come without non-essential equipment and features performance upgrades. The R-Spec will lose Bluetooth, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls to help reduce weight.

Instead it will come with a Track model performance package that includes a track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance Summer tires, Brembo braking system, Torsen limited-slip differential and R-Spec badging. Buyers can also optionally add a set of front strut camber adjustment bolts to help improve handling.

This $23,750 version is priced $3,000 less than the 2.0T Track model. Three colours will be available including Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red. Power comes from a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with dual continuously variable valve timing. Output is rated at 210hp. The engine is paired with a 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission.

Face it, Subaru’s latest design trend, from the Impreza to the Legacy, is plain ugly. I'm very sorry to say this, I have a great respect for this company who gave me so much pleasure in the past when they made amazing machines like the Impreza WRX STI Type RA-R…

But the past is the past, let’s focus on the future. The Hybrid Tourer is exactly what Subaru wants us to remember from the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Yes, the Hybrid Tourer is a concept car, and may not never be released, however, the lines of the Hybrid Tourer and its sleek and stylish design are the shapes where Subaru is heading, especially with this concept's sharp nose, soon to be offered on future “Subies”.

As far as the Hybrid Tourer concept is concerned, nothing new here, we already said quite a lot before here: TMS09 Preview: Subaru Hybrid Tourer.
Subaru’s booth included the Impreza WRX STi Carbon and other STI flavoured B4 and Exigea…

Although Audi has yet to officially announce the TT Forza Motorsport Edition, we do know that the coupe is finished with Forza 3 decals on the bodywork and comes with an Xbox 360 Elite console, coupled with a copy of the Forza Motorsport 3 game.

Shell has announced that it would run its biggest fuel promotion in a decade as part of its ongoing efforts to teach Singapore motorists how to save fuel for life. Shell will offer its new fuel Shell FuelSave 95 and 98 at a special price of only $1 per litre. The promotion will take place on Saturday, 24 October 2009 from 10am to 6pm at Shell stations island-wide (excluding Shell Pasir Panjang 328, Shell Sin Ming and Shell Upper Bukit Timah PIE), while supplies last. Shell‟s breakthrough fuel has been proven to help motorists save up to one litre of fuel with every full tank2. The promotional price means that motorists will get to fill up with Shell FuelSave 98 or 95 at a discount of almost 45 per cent off the normal nett price.

Shell is using this promotion as an incentive to galvanise motorists – to get them educated about fuel economy, and to show them how they can easily reduce their fuel expenditure by choosing the right fuel and practising Shell‟s FuelSave Tips.

Henry Chu, General Manager, Retail Sales & Operations, Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd, said. “Shell‟s global survey in January 2009 year told us that 90 per cent3 of drivers in Singapore said that they welcome more information on how to be more fuel efficient and are willing to change their driving behaviour to save more at the pump. We want to show them that it is possible to achieve that by using Shell FuelSave and practising Shell‟s FuelSave Tips. This is part of our ongoing efforts to help motorists get the most out of every drop at no extra cost.”

Shell has been educating motorists about fuel economy over the years through its FuelSave Tips. It will pass on these tips to motorists through a Shell FuelSave Savings Book that will be distributed at all participating stations during the promotion. Shell has printed 800,000 copies of the booklet in conjunction with the launch of Shell FuelSave earlier this month. Other than the Shell FuelSave Tips that teach motorists how to get the most out of their vehicles and advice them on driving more efficiently, the booklet is also packed with various Shell and partner promotions, including a FuelSave log for motorists to track their mileage.

Henry Chu added that Shell has put in place various measures to ensure that the promotion runs smoothly. These include engaging the Traffic Police, Land Transport Authority, SBS Transit, SMRT, as well as Certis CISCO Auxiliary Police to help manage traffic and public transport during the promotion period. He urged consumers to enjoy the promotion in an orderly and safe manner. On its part, Shell has also deployed additional pump attendants and cashiers at its stations to help speed up the process on-site, so that as many motorists as possible can benefit from the promotion.

Shell FuelSave Ambassador Eunice Olsen encourages Singapore motorists to take this opportunity to experience the difference from using the right fuel combined with fuel-saving tips. Calling on them to pass on their learnings, she said, “If we can get 100,000 people telling 10 friends or family members how to be more fuel efficient, then we‟ll have a million people on the roads saving fuel. Can you imagine how much fuel we can save then?”

In May this year, Eunice Olsen was involved in a global initiative by Shell to train more than 100,000 drivers worldwide through a digital tutorial on how to save more fuel.As part of its educational efforts, Shell is also offering free fuel economy checks at all Shell stations every Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 5pm from now until 15 November 2009.

Toyota Motor Corporation has unveiled the redesigned Mark X luxury sedan. The rear wheel drive Mark X is motivated by a new 314 horsepower 2GR-FSE 3.5 liter V6 powerplant that joins the 200 horsepower 4GR-FSE 2.5 liter V6. For the latter, buyers can also opt for an all wheel drive option. Both engines are offered with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is rated at 13.0km/l (10-15 test cycle) for the 2.5 liter V6 (two wheel drive) and 10.2km/l for the 3.5 liter V6.

The new Mark X is 1,435 mm high and both the width and track figures have been increased by 20 mm to help give the car a lower centre of gravity. It is treated to a three-lamp linear layout for the headlights while the rear also features a three-lamp layout with lights built into the trunk lid.

Inside, there is a leather-covered steering wheel, improved seat comfort, driver’s seat with motorized lumbar support function that shifts the seatback forward or back to improve back comfort during driving, a multi-information display, fully automatic independent temperature controls for the driver and passenger sides as well as a Plasmacluster Ions technology that helps combat bacteria.
According to Toyota, the gear-shifting functions support the driver “in merging and exiting and at intersections.” Also as standard is an Eco Driving Indicator that lights up to signify fuel-efficient operation and an Eco Zone Indicator that shows throttle use.

The auto maker also revealed that the shoulder portion of the door trim for the front and rear seats has been pushed outward by 25 mm (total for left and right) while the distance between the front seats has been increased by 20 mm. The Mark X also has Sport, Snow and Eco driving modes, Variable Gear Ratio Steering system (with electric power steering) which controls the angle of the front wheels according to vehicle speed, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management and an Adaptive Variable Suspension for models kitted with the sports package.
All models come with seven airbags including SRS side airbags, SRS curtain shield airbags and a driver’s seat knee airbag, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), TRC (Traction Control) and Active Headrests up front to reduce stress on the neck in a rear-end collision.

The sedan is also offered with a Pre-Crash Brake Assist system, a Pre-Crash Brake system and Pre-Crash Seatbelts, Intelligent AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System), Radar Cruise Control system equipped with a brake-control function and a Hill-start Assist Control function.
