Kaspersky Makes Dreams Come True!

5 Continents. 6 Faiths. 7 Languages. 8 Women… 1 Daring Ambition

The Kaspersky Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition has become a reality for the eight-member team and they owe it all to the generous sponsorship from IT security firm Kaspersky Lab. The expedition aims to reflect the ethos of the Commonwealth by promoting greater understanding and cooperation between nations and to highlight the achievements of women worldwide.
The women will be skiing over 900 kilometres in approximately 40 days throughout the entire expedition and are expected to reach their final destination on 1st January 2010. They will be flying to the Antarctica on 12th November for a few days of acclimatisation before commencing their great expedition to the South Pole.
They believe that the strength of the team lies in its diversity. The women believe that the reason of the trip is to bring together women from all sorts of different places, all sorts of different backgrounds, all sorts of different religions for one common mission.

The Team

Era is a 25-year-old Diplomatic Officer at Brunei’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs but previously taught Mathematics at a secondary school for 3 years. She is passionate about environmental issues and hopes to use her involvement in the expedition to raise awareness in Brunei of Global Warming and Climate Change.

Representing Cyprus in the Mediterranean is Stephanie Solomonides, a 25-year-old IT Implementation Officer from Nicosia. Endlessly enthusiastic and full of energy, Stephanie hopes that her participation in the expedition will enable her to tell more people about her country as well as inspiring other young people in Cyprus to push their boundaries and fulfill their dreams.

Representing Ghana in West Africa is 29-year-old Barbara Yanney. Barbara was educated in Ghana’s Eastern Region but completed her studies in America. Returning to settle in Accra, Barbara became the youngest magazine editor in the country before turning freelance. As well as inspiring the young women of her country, Barbara hopes to encourage young Ghanaian professionals living overseas to take up opportunities in Ghana.

Representing India is Reena Kaushal Dharmshaktu, a 38-year-old freelance outdoor instructor from Darjeeling, currently settled in Delhi. Reena is an extremely experienced mountaineer, having taken part in, and led, several Indian Mountaineering Federation expeditions in the Himalaya. She hopes to encourage more Indian women to take up careers in the outdoor industry having battled for the right to do so herself.

Representing Jamaica in the Caribbean is 30-year-old Kim-Marie Spence from Kingston. Kim loves trail-running and travelling, having volunteered all over the world from Japan to Israel. She works and strategizes for a regional think tank and has been involved in a number of other social initiatives. Kim hopes that her inclusion on the team will show other Jamaican women that ‘they have no limits’.

Representing New Zealand is 36-year-old Kylie Wakelin from Twizel on the South Island. For 16 years she owned and ran a successful boating business in Mt Cook National Park but has recently gained a Commercial Pilots Licence and intends to pursue flying as a career. Through this expedition she hopes to make a difference by bringing new ideas from around the world back to New Zealand.

Representing Singapore is Sophia Pang, a 36-year-old mother of three. Sophia combines freelance work as an IT Consultant with instructing aerobics and kickboxing. As well as teaching her daughter to ‘dare to dream and try’, Sophia hopes her participation in the expedition will show other women in Singapore that it is okay to put themselves first sometimes and to go after their own ambitions.

The team will be led on the ice by 31-year-old Felicity Aston, from the United Kingdom, who is also the founder and chief coordinator of the project. Felicity spent 3 years in the Antarctic studying the ozone hole and climate change with the British Antarctic Survey before returning to lead expeditions in Siberia, Greenland and the Arctic. By creating such a diverse expedition team Felicity hopes to encourage greater mutual support among women of the Commonwealth.

The Clothing

The team will be dressed in three layers of clothing; thermal, outer and insulating layers to protect them from the harsh weather conditions of the Antarctic.

Thermal Layer: Chocolate Fish Merino Wool base layer
The layer worn closest to the skin traps as much hot air as possible to insulate the body. They have chosen Chocolate Fish Merino wool base layers because it is all 100% New Zealand made and is guaranteed to be ethically sourced. The team tested the Chocolate Fish thermals in the blistering cold of Norway and found them warm, durable, non-stinky and non-scratchy.

Outer Layer: Montane Extreme Smock and Extreme Salopettes
Designed for high-activity outdoor sports in sustained and extreme cold environments, the Extreme range has a windproof Pertex outer with an insulating synthetic pile lining. Using a smock, rather than a jacket was a new concept for the team but once they tried it during training in New Zealand, there was no going back.

Insulating Layer: Montane North Star Jacket
A highly insulating jacket, worn over all their other clothing is literally a life-line in the extreme cold. The North Star has 800+ fill down but has a quilted design to reduce bulk.

Face Protection: Buff Windstopper
The face takes the brunt of the wind and the cold while skiing and face covering is essential to prevent cold injury. A buff is vital and the extra windstopper fabric is great extra protection.
Hat and socks: Chocolate Fish Merino Wool and Possum beanies and socks
Deliciously soft and warm, the combination of merino and possum is a hit with the team!

The Diet

Breakfast
It is for important for the team that breakfast contains as much energy-giving carbohydrate as possible. Porridge is simply oats with hot water and sugar added to it.They have decided to use Power Porridge which also contains a whole range of multigrains and seeds to give them extra fibre, minerals and vitamins that are vital to their well-being and performance.

Lunch
As it is too cold to stop in the middle of the day for a single meal, they graze throughout the day on a range of high-carbohydrate, high-fat foods to get plenty of energy. Sesame Snaps have the highest concentration of fat and carbohydrate they could find in a lightweight snack. The team will also be eating popcorn, chocolate, salted peanuts and banana chips.

Dinner
They use dehydrated meals in a foil pouch which just need hot water added to them before eating. That means no bowls, no cooking pots and no washing up! Fuizion have specially prepared home-cooked dehydrated meals for the team which contain extra fat and protein as well as using Halal meat.

Nutrition Supplements
These are the team’s secret weapon. With a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in their diet, the team will not be getting usual amounts of minerals and vitamins while at the same time pushing their bodies to the extreme limits of endurance. Therefore they replenish their reserves with Healthspan nutritional supplements ranging from Glucosamine (for healthy joints) to zinc, magnesium and antioxidants.

The Equipment

Tent
The team will be sleeping on the ice in two Hilleberg Keron GT 4. These 4-person tents are simple and quick to put up and pack away but are incredibly strong to withstand the most viscious Antarctic storms. They are a favourite for expedition because although relatively lightweight, they are also very spacious inside which is important when you think that this tent is a home for 4 people for 40 days!

Sleeping
Keeping warm when sleeping on the ice is not so much about the bag you are in, as the protection that you have from the ice underneath. The team will be using dense foam Multimats which are light, rugged and sleep-inducing!

Cooking and maintenance
The team will be using MSR XGK stoves to melt snow and heat water but need minimal other equipment in the tent. Each team member has a bowl with a lid, a mug, thermos and water bottle but everything else is shared between the tent. The team kit includes a GPS (Global Positioning System) handset for navigation and a Leatherman that has blade, scissors and heavy-duty pliers – all essential for common repairs.

Timekeeping
You may think that the last thing the team have to worry about in Antarctica is being late! But in fact, keeping track of the time is vital to the team's success. The team must make satellite phonecalls to support teams at precise pre-arranged times to let everyone know that they are safe and well. Watches are also used for navigation and for keeping a regular pace - important if the team are to reach the South Pole by New Year's Day as planned! Only Pilotur watches of Denmark will keep working reliably at extreme temperatures of -40C and below and the team are lucky to have one.

Toilet
The team does not have access to toilet or washing facilities while in Antarctica. However, they are keen not to leave any trace of their presence in the pristine polar environment and so they carry ‘Portable Johns’ supplied by Anteon. These are ingenious devices that allow the team to hygienically store and transport all toilet waste so that it can be shipped out of Antarctica with the team when they leave.

Camera Equipment
The team will be photographing and filming themselves during their 40-day expedition. The extreme cold plays havoc with delicate equipment and so they had to choose their kit carefully. They are taking two Panasonic TM300’s with high capacity battery packs and two Panasonic TZ7’s. All equipment has been kindly supplied by John Lewis.

Medical Equipment
With expert advice from Adventure First Aid, they have limited the medical kit to the essentials. As well as Spenco for blisters, laxatives and blockers for stomach troubles and Sudocreme for just about everything, they are also taking a selection of antibiotics and plenty of antiseptic wipes and dressings to keep any wounds clean. If a team member were to have a serious injury that required evacuation it might be days before a plane could reach them, therefore they also carry some serious painkillers for the long wait.

Communications
The team will be sharing their experiences with the world all the way through the expedition thanks to some very clever satellite technology. The only satellite communication system that works in Antarctica is the Iridium network. The people at Iridium have given the team plenty of talk time so that they will be able to speak directly to the world through podcasts on this website. The team are also very excited by the fact that they will be able to use their Iridium phones to send SMS messages - so they will be able to Twitter to the South Pole!

To reach the South Pole, the team will have to endure blizzards, crevasses, and extremely cold temperature conditions. The eight brave women from Brunei, Cyprus, Ghana, Jamaica, Singapore, India New Zealand and the United Kingdom will be the first from their respective countries to ski to the South Pole. The expedition is in conjunction with the Commonwealth’s 60th anniversary and aims to inspire women worldwide.
We wish them all the best!
