Need help with custom rig

Am interested in getting a custom rig. As am a noob, need help with the parts, after which will ask one of the shops to assemble it for me.

The ones I know :
1) 4GB RAM Kingston --guess Kingston RAM is ok
2) Elite Coolermaster casing
3) Already have mouse and keyboard, so do not need these
4) OS - already have

Parts that I need help with :
1) Want an Intel processor Core 2 Dual with around 2.6 GHz (Intel Quad is a possibility if price is reasonable)
2) Motherboard--ASUS (MSI is a possibility too)
3) Dedicated graphic cards (my old one was Ati Radeon X1600 which I'm pleased with). I have a laptop with Nvidia Geforce G102M vram 512MB which I'm disappointed due to the color contrast.
4) LCD monitor (any brand suggestion?)
5) Fan??
6) HDD (don't need a lot of disk space as not saving much).
7) CD Rom
8) Not sure whether anything else neded

Budget around $1k- $1.5k (+/- $300). Obviously the cheaper the better as my PC tends to last for only 1-3 yrs before spoiling.

I need help with finding a motherboard, processor, graphic card and HDD that can work with each other. Any suggestion for this? For graphic cards, I'm thinking of going with ATI and not Nvidia due to the color contrast issue based on the cards that I have now? So long as the power/capability is around or slightly higher than ATI Radeon X1600 is fine by me. Appreciate your help and expertise. Thanks.

PS: Do not want a SIS chipset as have heard bad things about it

Problem With External Monitor With Acer Laptop

Hello!

It started out like this. I have an Acer Aspire 5583 laptop. It's almost 3 years old now...

Hello!

It started out like this. I have an Acer Aspire 5583 laptop. It's almost 3 years old now and well used. And just a couple days ago during regular use the screen began to shake and scramble like never before..and finally blacked out. And after that I could start the laptop like usually but the screen is all black. So I thought the screen broke and I went to buy 20" Samsung Monitor because it was much cheaper for a new and bigger monitor than to replace the Acer one. BTW my Acer screen is 14".

But the problem is that when I start the computer with the external monitor plugged in, it only desplays the boot until you see the black screen with Windows XP booting. And after that the monitor goes black into standby/sleeping mode. The only way i've figured out to get anything work is to start the computer with VGA Mode enabled. Only then the screen on the monitor shows up but only in 640x480. And if I try to change the resolution the screen goes black and into sleeping mode again and I have to reboot. The strange thing also is that when i'm using programs let's say Mozilla, the laptop screen is only black. And when I move the cursor over the desktop or the start menu, it starts to scramble, and when I move it back to somewhere else, it stops.

I got some cd from Samsung that I would like to install but I can't in 640x480 because I can't see the whole window and the ''Install" buttons. I will try to download the latest Nvidia drivers and see if it helps. But I have a problem with the internet also. The Acer wireless switch seemed to brake also during the screen crash. First I thought the scramble was some kind of virus so I immediately turned the wireless switch off, and after that I can't turn it on anymore so i'm forced to use my superslow simcard internet.

I've been searching alot and see that many others have the same problems with the black screen, external monitors and broken wireless switches...but I haven't found any working answers yet..

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Just only when i use the hp as a modem.
