I concur with the philosophy underlying ChrisGill's statement.

Given that I am 51 years old and approximately 2/3 of my life is already water under the bridge, I have instructed my family as follows:
  • Spend the minimum amount of money as possible on my funeral. I'll be dead and gone--why waste your money?
  • Do not have a funeral service for me. I do NOT believe that a funeral service is a necessary part of the grieving process for "the survivors". Most people go to funerals out of obligation, and they would really rather be somewhere else.
I recently attended a funeral service for the 30-year-old son of the neighbors in our block of flats. He was beaten to death by unknown assailants. When I went to the viewing of his body, the thought clearly struck me...

His face looked like a figure in a wax museum. Truly, his soul--which animates our bodies--was gone.

Thus, I was confirmed in my personal conviction. Don't waste money or time on a funeral. The body that remains is worthless. The important component, the soul, has already departed.

basically one can save the body is just a outer case of what the soul contains but well as tradition passes down from generation, the funeral is a rite/rituals that one follows to present its last respect to the deceased be it soul or body...

hmm my insurance should be able to cover my funeral lol...

I'm assuming that the soul is capable of reading the hearts and minds of "the survivors" and knows their true feelings. A funeral is just a formality, probably perpetuated by the funeral industry for the last thousands of years.

totally agree with u!

if want to pay respect, can do it all the best respect while the person still alive, yeah, for the last respect also can but no need to waste too much money for funeral.
"Don't look to the past, coz it had already been happenned (we can't change it)"
"Don't too busy with the future, coz it's not yet happenned"
"Look to this moment, NOW...that's why it's called PRESENT (another word for GIFT)"

I don't see how this is related to financial planning and investment, since once you are dead, you don't need the money anymore.

The financial planning is for when you are alive. That's when you need the money.

Its pretty obvious, if planned ahead..no need to burden the family with costs of funeral and other services including coffin, crematorium as well as other miscellaneous items like maybe the tablet. For dead that include burial, that includes the need to buy/rent/bid cemetary land which is added expenses. Then there is also the usual buy a spot in the Orbituary to announce death and so on.

thats why from the way i see it, even the dead need some money since they only die once unless they are sure their family will give them a funeral according to your wishes. Not like there will be a lawsuit if the family fails to comply with your wishes.

With all the sacrifices made during life, wouldnt hurt to plan ahead for a grand finale but thats my opinion.

This thread is becoming rather morbid.

From a prudent use of money perspective, if the coffin will get burnt to ashes in a couple of days anyway, why not save a significant amount of money and use a cardboard box instead?
