Ok basically i will state some information about F@H as promised.

Setting up F@H

*This is more for the graphical version guide, as i did not have any experience with the setting up of the console version.

1. Go to this website http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html And download the suitable file. You can use the Graphical or Console client, i will explain a little more later, Just make sure you download the right copy.

2. Install the file ! The name you have to type in is NOT important, but i prefer you enter in the correct details, so it's all up to you.

3. F@H will automatically start up.

4. I'm not sure how to set up the console version but i will explain how to set up the graphical one. Right click on the console itself, or if you had cancelled the window, it will go into the taskbar. You can right click the icon in the taskbar as well. Go to configure.

5. Set your username[the one circled in red on the top] as the one in your nickname in this forum. This makes you more easily recognised. Add a VRZ.[nick here] or VrZ.[nick here] or anything up to your imagination. The team number, please put 48269 !!! [The one circled in red below]

6. For the internet connection, if you aren't those type that are 24/7 online, please check the first box circled in red. The last box, also circled in red, will allow you to fold LARGE protein strains if i'm not wrong.

7. For the customizations it's all up to you. The molecule draw rate is set to a minimum for me as i don't want it to consume too much Cpu power.

8. I set a higher piority for my Cpu when i'm not gaming, as it doesn't really affect me using my MSN and IE while surfing. Hence the max Cpu percentage as well. I prefer a 3 minute checkpointing interval as there are sometimes where i close F@H to do benching and hope not to lost too much data as well. Lastly, deadlines for me is disabled.

Next thing, reading your Graphical Console.

Firstly, you computer would have to download what is called the work packet. This is somewhat like the template of the assignment assigned to this computer. Note: This make take a long long time to download, but the time can range from 1 minute to 1 hour.

Next, the readings on the graphical window itself.

As we can see from here, there are a few things which you might not be sure of.

Donator - Your account name.

Team Number - Make sure this is 48269.

Finished WUs - Finished work units. WU is like 1 assignment and takes anytime from 1 day to 5 days for a WU to complete, for a AMD939+ 3000+ Or Intel P4 2.6Ghz.

Working on - This is the model of the protein you are working on. The folding website has a site to find the number of points for that particular WU. This can be found in the FAQ section later on.

Frames Completed - Basically this is the progress of your WU. WUs also differ in the number of frames and can range from 100 frames to 12500. Usually 1 frame in a 400-500 WU can take up to 5 minutes and 1 frame in 12500 can finish in 10 seconds.

They also give the average time per frame. [Note: At the start the average time required per fram is not accurate. You have to let it run for at least 10 minutes before the actual value is calculated.]

Estimate in this section is the amount of frames finished but not saved into the computer yet. Unstable overclocking would also give some ridiculous numbers. For example, frames actually completed 0/500 but the estimate is around 200/500.

WU End - This i don't need to explain i guess. You have to let F@H run for 10 minutes before you get the actual value.

What is protein folding ? Why should i fold ?

Just like how we are made of cells, proteins are made of polypeptides. Folding would calculate how these polypeptides interact and form new proteins.

Folding proteins might help researchers find a cure to certain types of cancer and of course, stability testing and i use it for burn-in !

What is a WU ?

A WU is a work unit. It can differ in protein type [Gromacs, Tinker, Amber, DGromacs], size and frame count. This WU is a template of what the computer is suppose to calculate and is an 'assignment'. Finishing a WU would entitle you to some points.

Does F@H consume alot of CPU power ?

Personally i don't have problems surfing net, using MSN messenger and folding at the same time with max cpu utilisation. Even when i forgot to close F@H while benching once, my 3DMark06 score dropped by about 80 points only. So it doesn't really eat up alot of CPU power.

I know the name of the protein i'm folding! But how to i check out how many points it gives ?

I have joined Team VRZ but i don't see my name on the Team VRZ list ? Why ?

You will have to finish folding your first WU before you can see your name in the internal team rankings.

How do i check the team rankings ?

Can i use multiple computers for one account ?

Yes ! Why not ? Just put the same Donator name for all.

Oh no ! My WU just restarted !!! What happened ?

These could be due to a few things. The first is that the server doesn't need anymore folding of this particular protein. Hence it just receives what you have folded and gave you another WU. The second is that you computer is unstable when overclocking.

In both cases, you will receive points, but it's a fraction of what you deserve. Additionally, your WU could on the F@H site might balloon to a large figure, just like mine =X.

I have a dual core Cpu ! Can i fold 2 instances of F@H ?

Yes ! *The configuration part i'm not so sure yet so i'll add on later =D

How long do i have to take to download a WU ?

This would be subjective. Small WUs can take up to 10-15 Minutes. Normal WUs can take from 5-20 Minutes. Large WUs can take up to 1 hour. This is roughly my guide when i'm on with 3 other computers sharing a Maxonline 6500.
