You open up the Steam IM (click on the buttons "Friends" at the bottom of the Steam app). Sign in, and add the list on this page into your friend list.

When you log into L4D it'll be rather obvious who are playing. You can join their games or ask people who are online if they're interested in a game.


If you're REALLY new though, I'd suggest at least finishing a campaign in single player mode so you know the basics of the game before going online
