there are different regions as in you can only use in some countries. but whole cares really

Most DVDs purchased from different countries in the world come with different region codes. Thus region free = code free..or to be more specific, the term shud have been region code free.

Lite-on drive or any OEM Lite-on Drives would be best since their Firmware is easily flashable

all Sony Optical drives are Lite-on drives.

Not all. Some are BTC.

ok then... all RETAIL Combo drives are... at least for the current models....
older models i not too sure.

DVD-ROM current models should be lite-on..

that that are BTC... which are the models?

I can't remember, Sony has tons of models. Go read at HWZ forum, someone mentioned there before.

what i do is go to the store and search online find a good name brand cheap drive with a warrenty and chances are it will last as long as you need it and if not you have a warrenty

I mean Ive seen heaps and Baffalo if i spelt it right is mid price range, perforance and reliability are all good bang for your bucks
