Distingush Genuine & Fake Memory Stick Pro Duo Ayahiro Jan 16th, 06, 11:23 PM #1 (permalink)
Currently, there is a huge batch of fake memory sticks in the market. It looks so real that even supplier can't see the differences.

While walking around Sim Lim today, I also spotted some shop selling fake SONY memory stick pro duo. As I have known, there are currently 3 brands of fake memory stick pro duo products and 2 of them are in Singapore. They are:

- Sony
- Sandisk
- Lexar

Mostly will ask.. HUH!! SANDISK (note.. not SCANDISK is SANDISK)!! Serious or not!! yes.. serious!! THERE IS FAKE SANDISK MEMORY STICK PRO DUO!! lol

Anyway this short tips here will tell beginners on spotting the fake SONY memory stick pro duo products. The sandisk one I'm still doing the investigation. All the informations given below are based on web infos + SONY given infos.

1 - Prices
The prices of fake MS Pro Duo are very cheap at retail shop... unless the boss is doing a closing down sales. The price are usually ranging bout $200-$250 for a 2GB one, and this price is actually the supplier price for an original one.

2 - Seals
Original Sony Package Seals have Long Staple like Seal, and it is sealed in using heat. Fake one have round seals, and the seals are sealed up using glue.

Fake Seal

3 - Capacity
Fake 2GB MS Pro Duo have 1948MB and 1959MB of memory space when it is shown on devices like PSP. Genuine one have a capacity of 1909MB while some devices will read 1910MB.

Real MS Pro Duo Capacity

Fake MS Pro Duo Capacity
Click the image to open in full size.

For the old batch of 1948MB Fake version, I actually feel quite shocking... because it indeed can save up to 1948MB!! Tested and Proven by myself!!

For the 1948mb newer version and 1959MB Fake version, all I have to say is good luck. although it is written 1959MB, the size actually cannot hold more than 1GB.. which is reported by a lot of people, so it means that it is the "cheat" which makes the software reads 1959MB.. while the card is only around 1GB.

4 - Transfer Speed
The transfer speed of real one is at about 80Mbps. Fake one will have slower transfer speed. 1948MB one actually can go on 65Mbps to 70Mbps... 1959MB one ... at most 60Mbps.

To test timing, try transfering a 1GB file to the stick and use the stopwatch to calculate the time of file transfer. This is the easiest way.

5 - Structures
Fake MS Pro Duo is thicker than original one. Try fitting it into an adapter, and you will find that the fitting have problems. It doesn't seems to fit into the adapter.. (feel like squeeze it in). The newer fake version even have problems fitting into PSP.. as reported by Sony as the memory stick is stuck inside the PSP. (newer one are the 1959mb versions)

The words carved behind the Fake MS Pro Duo card is printed on... while the original is engraved into it. The know if it is printed on or not... just use your thumb to feel it. Fake one.. the words u feel is like a bit of pop up.... the original one u cant feel the words.

The metallic stripes, also call the connectors, for fake one... should have black holes seen on the metal stripe as the metal stripe did not cover fully, and this happen the most common on the 1959mb version and the 1948mb newer version. The original one is fully covered to the bottom without showing any incomplete-ness.

6 - Package
The Fake package.. actually looks totally alike compare to the real package. No one can actually see the differences!! Even the hologram seems so real!! The package... if u take a look properly... u will know that at the side of the package there is 4 pictures. Notice carefully!! some packages pictures are not in order!!

Some people told me to look out at the PSP compatible logo at the top corner. If got, means fake one. But just take note, the PSP compatible logo is AVAILABLE on the japanese version of original MS pro duo.. and it cannot be used to determine whether it is fake or genuine.

turn it to the back of the packge.. and look at the black printing.. for fake one... u will see white spots on the black part of the printing. Good quality printing by sony will show that there is NO white spots!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those now holding the old 1948MB version, I might just say U are lucky for a while, as there is still not much problem on this card. Those with newer 1948mb and 1959mb that can actually hold only 1GB of data... take care..

INSIST on a warranty card if u r getting sandisk one... for the 5 years warranty. Sony one im not too sure bout the online warranty status... but keep the receipt!! if u discover that it is a fake one... bring it down to SONY with the receipt!!

The above only show some of the tips... any more info i will add in... and pls give in more information about looking out for fake MS Pro Duo.

Last but not least picture below shows... a fake SANDISK MS Pro Duo
anyone can spot the difference?

Done my full research today at SLS regarding this memory stick problem.

Seems like SLS supplier for high speed memory stick pro duo also took some pirated goods, and the results are seriously unexpected... but it is true.

Below are the research on the at various floor regarding the FAKE MEMORY STICKS PRO DUO that the shops are selling. PLS NOTE THAT THE MEMORY STICKS DISCRIBED BELOW ARE ABOUT FAKE ONE!!~

1st Floor of SLS (All the shop that sells memory sticks)
In some shops, all the memory sticks that are original are placed at the front of the hanging hooks. But when U ask them for it... they will take out the pirated one which is hidden behind the originals at the hanging hook, and tell me that they are ORIGINAL!!! WARRANTY BY SONY!!! just one look and I know it is pirated one.... one uncle wanna sell me fake 2GB non high speed for $280 and fake 2GB high speed for $320...haha ....worse more... some uncles even try to cheat me about the price.... see the price range and... u will know...

Price Range given by the shops for a 2GB: $320 to $1200 (U all can try guessing what shop is this that quote me $1200)

2nd Floor of SLS
Personallly gone to Active Foto to check. The Fake 2GB one are hiding at the most bottom of the display... costing $278. When I ask the sale assistant about the warranty given... they can't give me a proper answer... just tell me that the box didn't write so they dunno!! seems like they know about the fake memory stick case and dun dare to tell the customer about it.

Price Range given by the shops for a 2GB: $278 to $450 (lol... the higher the cheaper?)

3rd Floor of SLS
people who work in SLS or happen to go by SLS just go in and see... the display at the front showing the memory stick of some 1GB one are fake one... distingushed by the seal... and the 5 year warranty logo the currently sony is having now. and same thing... they actually are trained to answer customer well regarding the fake product and the original one...

Price Range given by the shops: $130 (1GB FAKE. note that only the first 2 at front of the display are fake.. the rest at the back are original genuine!!... the 512MB fake one I forgot bout the price) (they have original 2GB without highspeed one selling for $245)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dun really want to go up to 4th floor and above to check.... lol... but just by walking and spotting fake memory stick pro duo around SLS, it took me around 5 hrs++.... below are some infos about the memory sticks...

-Over 80% of the memory stick pro duo in SLS produced by sony is fake... mostly are the 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB high speed type..... and 1GB and 512MB non high speed type.

-Note that 2GB fake memory sticks now read 1910mb on all sony device instead of the 1948mb and 1956mb. One friend who is working in SLS help me verify my mistakes

-There are actually original 1GB high speed one found in SLS... but the 2GB high speed one ALL ARE FAKES!!!! The original one for 2GB are actually non high speed one and are found in BOXES!!! (sandisk or sony is the same)

-The new ORIGINAL sony memory sticks are label with the 5 years warranty logo.... and the seals are long instead of round. The 5 years warranty logo will appear in ALL SONY MEMORY STICKS PRODUCT!! The back of the product package also have a company stamp to prove genuine.

-Sandisk pirated memory stick pro duo is also spotted at 2 shops in SLS...

-A 2GB SONY memory stick high speed one is bought by me and have done a test with it. It is confirm a fake... and my friend will bring down to sony to see what they have to say regarding the WARRANTY AS STATED BY THE SHOP!!!

Anyway the research is done by my friend and me who act and speak japanese in the shops... people who actually saw us.. pls keep quiet.. haha... the next research will be done in funan IT mall.... and this time... we will act as.... hehee.. secret...

P/S: please dun ask me what shop is selling fake... I only can say the shop name in SLS are protected because I dun want to make them no business... $25K rental fee per month is really hard for them....

and one thing... fake product can also be used... except the warranty problem. To me... they are so-call 3RD PARTY instead of fake... the real original 2GB high speed memory speed pro duo actually costs twice the price of the 3RD PARTY one... so for budget people... 3rd party high speed is also not a bad choice... since the transfer and loading speed is STILL FASTER THAN SANDISK (70-72Mbps actually instead of 80Mbps)

good guide...but it will be better if you can include more pictures on the different components cuz it can be quite confusing on what you are saying..heh...

I believe sony original gives 5 years of warranty for original ones, if it's only 1 yr warranty, either it's a 3rd party "fake" set or an export set, and it's self warrantied by the shop, and not Sony. Hence I am also v wary when shops selling 1 yr warrantied cards..pay a little more for original and 5 years warranty, why not?
