intel is not THAT bad.. but amd is cheaper for its performance.. heat is less.. and u can tap the overclocking potential if you ever need it.

Intel has acquired a bit of a negative reputation in recent times, rest assured the situation with Intel is not as bad as the marketing hype and fanboys would have you believe. Indeed, I do not feel that Intel makes a poor choice at all at this juncture. Allow me to explain briefly...

Firstly, Intel has some rather promising chips coming out within the next few months - including the much vaunted "Conroe". More likely than not, the Conroe could be the microarchitecture of the year... of course, AMD might have something else up it's sleeve but early reports of the AM2 are not promising.

What is quite certain is that chances are, sometime during this year, you're gonna have to make the move towards a DDR2 platform as platforms based on that RAM standard are likely the be the most established ones of 2006.

As present Intel offerings aren't really that bad - in fact the Presler is quite a sensational performer - you might want to consider an upgrade path that resembles the following:

Presler -> Conroe

Even if you do decide to go the AMD way after conversion to Presler, you would at least have the basic building blocks already in place - i.e. the RAM and the GFX card(s) etc. Being able to use the same RAM is not only a good cost saving measure, but in the event that higher speced modules are available, you could at least keep those sticks of DDR2 as backup or you could find a buyer for your used modules.

A large part about building a PC is about strategizing your purchases, this way, you not only make your dollar stretch, but you help cover your bases while doing so.

- Do note: discussions on performance of the platforms are still a little sketchy, but it's safe to say that the Conroe will prove a lot of nay-sayers wrong.
- The moral of the story is that it's foolish to subscribe the the idea of a company's products performing at a consistent level - i.e. that one company will always produce products that are inferior to those of another. I maintain that such beliefs are the realm of fanboys and hold no place in the heart of a true tech worshipper (not that I am one mind you, I just like changing my hardware around every once in a while).

You want some cheap Dual Cores then 805 ! If you want AMD then 3500+ isn't too bad.
