lol a hdd already taking so little watts.. even u could save a few.. just dont justify the performance loss for me..

more significant maybe removing those CCFL or LED stripes..
use a more mid end gpu than high end ..

I agree with those bling blings and use of lower end GPUs. But I do feel that the general misconception will be that "it only saves a few watts". If this Green Drives are practical, more people adopts it, small watts can become a significant power reduction since in a place like Singapore, almost everyone will have a PC at home. However, in the case of a hard disk, it usually won't make much difference cause low power = low performance = to more time needed to do the same thing = likely no power saved.

Cost effective for end users? I think the price is not very attractive if you take into consideration, this fact. It is only as cheap as the average 7200rpm drive. I think the idea was initially seen as good, even myself thought so, though I was not 100% convince. But this article def changed my opinion of such drives completely. Good article though. I think my HTPC will be SSD and 1TB 7200RPM drive this year. No more suffering from poor response time and transfer rate with the promise of low power consumption from the hard drive makers.

If green drives cost the same as normal drives, there might be an incentive.

However WD Green used to cost over $20 more than performance drives. Even now when HDDs are at all time low prices, it still costs $10-15 more.

It would take years of constant operation to save that $15 via electrical bill savings.

So you're paying more just to save your bills? Sounds like a gimmick to me. Especially when you can take a cheaper performance HDD right now and use the savings to pay off your "high" energy bills from its usage.

You're more likely to save money from a high efficiency power supply than a green HDD.

Hmm I deleted a reply regarding that cos I thought OT...

85% vs 90% efficient PSU for a 200W system
235W vs 222W
Power saving = 13W
Premium to pay for 80Plus Gold over Bronze = alot

You're talking about Bronze vs Gold... its alot already.

What about the ordinary power supplies most non enthusiasts use? They are 60% efficiency usually.

Savings are even higher than expected.

Talk about marketing conning the world. Reminds me of the fruit company.
bro, i totally agree with you. most of the consumers are blind with marketing effort by the companies. they don't see the full picture even after they purchase (sad to say that). i can't wait to change my iPhone away due to a lot of reasons like battery lifespan, phone starting to slow down after each update by apple but tied down with the 2 years plan..

personally i have nvr thought of WD green even when i am getting a storage hdd. i just go for WD black. to me if you want to save energy, the best is still not to use a com. imagine someone using i7 and get WD green cuz he wan 2 save energy.. thinking of that just make me

Why does everyone think WD Green is cheaper?

Please compare the prices guys! WD Green is one of the most expensive 1TB drives in the market! We got friggin Pricewatch pricelist downloads to check!

Samsung, Seagate, Hitachi 7200rpm drives are all cheaper than WD Green 5400rpm.
