I've been following news about the movie and the initial screening reports are quite positive so far.

Surprisingly yes! Well, at least better than we expected. Good enough? One reviewer actually loved the film, so maybe this is just your usual mindless summer actioner, which I typically enjoy. Let's see...

G.I - "General Infantry" some say GI was from first WW refering to the metal they lug around, but most use it now to describe groundpounders in a more exotic cartoonist can-never-die way.

"American G.Is in afghan got asswhiped by poorly equiped taliban fighters."

added :
"Government Issue" is also used but usually by non military personal to poke fun at the military. e.g. factory producing 4by2 crewcut zombies = G.I etc.

but over here we are 3G Joes
