[Free Short Film Screening]: First Take - October moving_images Oct 2nd, 09, 11:23 AM #1 (permalink)
It's Free!

The Substation Moving Images presents
FIRST TAKE
5 October 2009
The Substation Theatre
8pm, FREE ADMISSION

First Take, happening every 1st Monday of the month at The Substation, is a popular screening of new local short films and is followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. A platform for new filmmakers and anyone who is interested in filmmaking to meet, exchange ideas and show their work. See the future talents of Singapore film!

1. THE RAVEN/ NELSON YEO / 6 MIN / 2009 / PG

Synopsis:
The Raven stands atop the building looking down onto the street. He is the observer, the guardian and the grim reaper, making sure that someone who’s about to die a natural death dies a NATURAL DEATH…

Director's Bio:
Nelson is currently majoring in digital filmmaking in the NTU School of Art, Design & Media. His shorts, “A Fistful of Yusof Ishaks” and “Ginseng Boy”, have been shown at First Take and the Singapore International Film Festival (non-finalist) respectively. He is currently finishing up his short film, “A Hole in the Bed”.

2. LOVE LAWS / CHERIYAN LYDIA NATALIA / 17 MIN / 2009 / NC16

Synopsis:
The Love Laws govern who should be loved, how much, and by whom. Despite this, Ammu Kochamma, a Touchable widow, has an illicit relationship with her Untouchable lover, Velutha Paapen, and plans to flee with him. The story unfolds to show the dire consequences of transgressing these rules; thus pushes the characters to their limit. Love Laws explores the meaning of forbidden love against the backdrop of tradition.

Director's Bio:
I sought to create an Indian iconographic piece in the parameters of Singapore while exploring an intense dimension towards the film, filing it with beautiful landscapes while subtly mirroring that of India. Being greatly influence by the works of Director Deepa Mehta and the fascination of the New Indian Cinema, I present a film for all to follow the plight of the characters, while enjoying the emotional journey alongside them.

3. REDFICTION / GIRI ARNAGA / 14 MIN / 2009 / PG

Synopsis:
Marco seems to be delusional, from time to time he sees costumed bunnies interacting with him. He stumbles upon a mysterious advertisement while watching a midnight show claiming to sell a product that helps the consumer to achieve his goal. The product is called “REDFICTION”

Director's Bio:
The theme of the film is mind over matter. The story itself is about a guy changing for the better even in extreme situations. Ultimately we want to show that when you put your mind into something, it is achievable.
