Question on medic duties joshua182 Jun 5th, 09, 10:12 PM #1 (permalink)
I just got posted out from my combat medic course today and i was wondering if any medics or people who have information on some questions here would be kind enough to share.

Firstly what exactly is a BCS medic? Is it for life?

What is a medical centre medic? Is it possible for one to be able to fulfill both roles at the same time or does each medic specialize in his own area?

My posting is to Mundai hill medical centre under MMI, whatever that means.

Practically BCS medic is better compared to company medic.

You're as a HQ unit rather than those in frontline cheonging.
BCS stands for Battalion Casualty Station.

Each Battalion has a BCS team consisting of 2x Medical officer, 1x Senior medic and 9x medics for Reinforced load.

Medical Center medic is just a nickname. Its just to say you're doing clinical duties in medical centers like taking temperature, blood pressure, dispensing medicine etc.....all center related jobs.

Yup.....in fact BCS medic serves in medical center all the time except for battalion exercise.

MMI = Military Medicine Institute
BCS medics has practically few roles as below. I'll describe a bit

* MOPA aka MO personal assistant - To assist MO in doing data entry to system. Not a good job especially most MO have weird attitude. I've seen majority of MOPa suffering but some has benifit as they're the closes to MO who's your boss.

* Dispense Medic - Medic who take charge of dispensary drugs. Main role is to stock take for drugs and give out medicine prescription to those who comes to take drugs. One of the best role unless you give wrong medicine and you're in for big serious trouble if involve life threatening situation

* Docu medic - Takes charge of dockets for whole battalion few hundred servicemen medical file. Lias a lot with clerks in HQ. Quite a slack job if taken over from previous docu who does update regulary

* Store IC - The names says all. It give you full control and stock check of the BCS store and equipment. One of the bad job since store is always a problem when comes to auditing. Avoid getting this.

Of above few roles my fav is dispense but too bad was given docu but it was great as i did all defragmentation of documents.
Sent to spec course and came back to take over medic 2ic.

It was 4yrs since i ORDed from 1st Guards.

Hope its informative enough for ya.

Looking back it was fun. The only problem was the freaking Senior medic.
Great thing abt MOPA u can also do docu medic and also can "influence" the MO.
Hence the medical centre is basically at ur "control"
A great job esp if have a great MO.
Most of the MOs are new so their attitude not so farked up lah.

Hmm.....the only two senior medic i knew in HQ guards was Staff Ng and Sgt Sandy. Any of those you served?

I've seen the crappiest few MO who vent their frustration on medics by giving them worse job to clear while we hide one corner......lol.

Good and bad but doctors generally have eccentric moods. Served 7 different MO to comment this.

Be glad to be in medic. Other than being jabbed 16g IV which i excel in it with <5% misses thru my whole NS service.......its real helpful to have paramedical knowledge especially if you get to go Spec II which offers you paramedic level 2 cert.

You know medical stuff better.

I feel that other than driver which gives you a driving license for free most of time......medic is the next best gain with good technical knowledge which you could bring out after NS.

I used to keep asking doctors about medical ailments and self medications.

Cannot be Sgt Sandy, she was still an instructor in SMM 8 years ago, only went to guards a few years back.

6SIR company medic 7-8 years ago, xiong until i want to beat people.

As long as not company/platoon medic in infantry then should not be that xiong......
