Do you mean a ADSL modem + router, or just a plain modem?

AFAIK, no modems can assign IPs at all....

If you do mean a router, then practically almost any router can do what you want. Or maybe you are looking for an ADSL modem that comes with a built-in router?

There are many out there that offer ADSL 2+ router.
I am currently using DSL 2640T by D Link. I would say its one of the cheaper ADSL 2+ wireless g feature router as compared to similar models by Linksys and Netgear.

You can just go and check out cos i bought mine in Feb so my research on the models might be out dated now.

Why don't you get a modem and router separately? That way if you ever decided to change provider in the future you don't have to change the whole thing.

There's one very compelling reason why - Children.

Often, the child/children might be smart enough to figure out that if daddy/mommy is blocking sites via the router, they can unplug the router and stick it directly into the modem.

If they are both the same physical box, there isn't a way to bypass it short of hacking the admin password heheheh!

you can try what i did - use modem purely in bridge mode then connect to modem.

then from modem to a router running openwrt, tinyproxy and dansguardian
Networking: Thomson ST536v6, AEBS N Gigabit, WRT54GL
Portables: MacBook Unibody 2.4GHz

For TS:
This was what i was told when i bought my router too. But in the end settled for combo due to price constrains cos i bought wireless adapter together with it also and save power as well as i only need to power up one device. So far this router working well.

I have yet to explore into the details and small bits about networking. I will wait until the end of the year then i do reading up and exploration so i don't really know much about networking but i just plug in and the setting up was very smooth if you use the default settings. Things get more complicating especially for me when i start playing around with the stuff.

Heh I don't have kids, and even if I do they'll be too afraid of me to wanna touch anything of mine *evil grin*

In any case, the typical layman just wants the whole thing to "work", without having to mess around with OpenWRT et al. Hence, a ADSL + router combo device is ideal - quick and painless, and pretty much kid-proof.

another simple way is to disable DHCP on your modem and make your router use static IP.

that way they cannot plug directly into the modem.
