Weird Laptop D/C Issue ORiN Apr 13th, 07, 06:06 PM #1 (permalink)
Actually, I am trying to resolve a weird frequent disconnection issue with my fren's laptop. She's using Starhub and using wireless to connect to her internet connection. She got no problem when connecting to the internet using her father's laptop but faces frequent d/c when using her own laptop. Anyone with advice on the troubleshooting?

is the disconnection from modem to starhub (out of home) or from her laptop to modem (within her home)?

If I am not wrong it is between her laptop and the modem. She got no problems staying online with her other laptop.

Could it be the wireless card's problem? Ask her to try back-date the driver version or try to use the new driver. If the above solutions still could not solve the problem, go to the laptop's service centre.

One thing that she just noticed. She got no problem staying online when she's in the living room. Once she move to her room then the connection unstable. Weird thing is that her room is near to the wireless router.

Where is the router located? How near is near? Are there any walls blocking the signal?

if the laptop wireless NIC support netstumbler, go download this software and do a site survey. I suspect the things in between the wireless AP and the laptop are causing the problem. Stuff like steel enforced concrete wall can cause a big deal. Btw, kindly state what is the Wireless AP/Modem or router. Using g, b, mixed g/b, pre-N or draft-N network?

I rule out the possibility of the wireless NIC giving problem.
