Good router recommendation needed welcomb Apr 15th, 07, 11:57 PM #1 (permalink)
I'm looking for a reasonable NAT enabled router for sharing my broadband connection. Wireless or additional ports are not necessary cos I can use my current Linksys BEFW11S4 as a switch and access point.

What I do need is enough memory to support a large number of TCP/UDP connections. My current router doesn't have enough space in the NAT table and keeps dropping connections and also crashes regularly, needing to be power cycled.

I'm thinking of getting the Linksys WRT54GS Version 2.1 or 3 cos it has 32MB RAM and OpenWrt can be installed, but I can't find it anywhere! Everywhere is selling the newer but "neutered" Version 6.

Anyone knows where to get one or can recommend another router? Thanks.

ok after searching the whole of sim lim and funan, I concede defeat. There can be no more old Linksys routers to be found. So I think I should be getting the ASUS WL-500gP.

One shop quoted me $199 when it's only going for $122 online. Normally I'd put it to shipping charges but it doesn't feel ok when the WRT54GL is going for much more online than in the shops.

I'm more keen on the ASUS WL500g series cos I know there are 3rd party linux firmwares which I can use to play with.

What's the diff between that and the premium, aside from the 200MHz processor and a mini PCI radio?

Draft N and MIMO routers such as the D-Link 655 and 634m also perform well within your price range. The only good thing about the Linksys series is that the firmware can be flashed, therefore opening a huge range of uses for it, but not neccessarily performance-wise.

Take a look at this chart

True, but what I want is to be able to flash the firmware and experiment with it. At the same time it would be good to have a USB port to connect my printer and additional storage to it. Also is the performance comparison using the supplied firmware? Because features like QoS which can help performance can be tweaked with 3rd party firmwares.

Fuwell is selling the WRT54GL v1.1, which is just a renamed WRT54GS version 4 (with Speedbooster disabled in default firmware. Can be easily re-enabled with 3rd party ones), at a offer price of $88. Will be going down to SLS tonight so can help take a look around.

Trust me, I used to use wrt54g v2.2, already one of the best versions out there, and with only 1 pc running on ethernet and it already bottlenecks. Was using open wrt.

WL-500gx has 2 USB ports and 2 extra hidden ones which you can add: http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=1779

However I went round sim lim today can cannot find anywhere selling it. Only have the WL-500gP, cheapest $174.

Can we order online and ship it in? Or do we need the iDA approval stamp?

Eh how come the WL500G-X shown in that 2nd link is different from what I found elsewhere? The forums I searched said the GX is essentially a Deluxe.
