Have you considered QNAP TS-401? Price-point is similar to the Thecus.

I was considering between the 2-bay and 2-bay models. Initially, I wanted the 4-bay ones and narrowed the choices to Qnap, Synology and Thecus. I was tempted by the Synology as it was the cheapest 4-bay NAS (along with the 4-bay Thecus N4100). But then, I read about the newer 407/407e was just being released, so I decided to go with a 2-bay model first (chose the Qnap TS201).

Would be interested in your experience with either the 5-bay Thecus 5200 and the Synology 406/406e. My TS201 is already filling up pretty fast.....

Both are two different product.

Synology is NAS that's works......

Thecus is NAS with a little more power and speed...

Both to also priced proportionally to their power....

Take your pick.

Get the Synology 406/406e. In theory, 406 is faster than the 406e series. Their diff is due to the transfer speed and performance of the RAID controller inside if I'm not wrong. But I guess not very big performance gap since oni 100bucks more. Get 4x500GB and VIOLA, a 1.5TB NAS with RAID 5 function. Really worth it. I think its more value for money. In terms of performance, I think its also quite good too as reviewed by several PC mag. I intend to scrap my 3Ware PCI-Ex RAID Card and migrate all to an external RAID 5 NAS, more practical and energy conserving.

Sorry for reviving this old thread.

I have 4 Seagate 750 gb drives that are located all over and I am think of putting them into a 4 or 5-bay NAS Tower.

Any comments on the following models: QNAP TS-401, Thecus N5200 or N4100, Synology CS-407 or CS-407e? Cheapest is the CS-407e ($899 from SS) and most expensive is the TS-401 and N5200 ($1,699). I don't do BT and is essentially looking to use the NAS as one RAID 1 storage device.
