1 PC, 2 Users - for me and my partner... henryshin Apr 19th, 07, 10:31 PM #1 (permalink)
My partner asked me to setup another PC in our home network for her to use.

Instead of spending on another machine, I was searching on the Internet for a solution to share my existing PC and found that there is such a thing call "PC Sharing Box".

I went into deeper search and found this solution which is just ideal for me -
Magic Mirror Multimedia Workstation

I just need to add other standard devices, ie. Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse.
Question is, does anyone knows where can I purchase this or similar locally in Singapore???

You are better off getting a new machine, reason being:

1. Its gonna be hell configuring that
2. Its gonna be slow depending on your current computer specifications
3. It may even cost more than a new machine
Rig: A C2D + 2 x Nvidias + 4GB ram + 5TB HDDs and 3 x Dells

hmm a cool device i would say but then the webby did not state hwo much will it costs ?
I suppose since hardware is relatively cheap nowadays.
it it more advisable to get another pc.
if both of u uses the computer extensively, then it will be super taxing on the pc unless it is of a super high end server based pc.
but if that is the case, i suppose u can just get a lower end pc to cater to this need.
cos such taxing might just kill the high end hardware.
but if both of u uses the com not very frequently then u might as well just create 2 users in the computer and rotate the usage ?

I think I need to explain more in details regarding this project of mine.

Yes, I might need a more powerful machine to support 2 users.
Getting another rig "might" be cheaper.
But depends how much is this item and how powerful is the 2nd rig.
(She play PC game and I play online game).
Yes, I understand all the pros and cons.

However, I am exploring this option becos of the common factors like:-
1. No need to maintain 2 machines. My partner know how to use but I do the maintaining.
2. No need to place another PC in the room to take up space.
3. No need to use more power sockets.
4. No need to "see" more cables like power cables, network cable.
5. No need to buy 2 sets of license for softwares.

Currently, I managed to find somewhere in Malaysia selling it.
But I'm asking whether can I find it in Singapore?

I have sent them an email but they yet to reply me.
I will give them a call if I need to.
However, the support may be too far away.

I read more articales on BUDDY B-210 than Magic Mirro MMU2000XP.

1. http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/r_buddy_b210/

Extract:
If you’re thinking about getting a second PC but you can’t afford to, then I may have found the solution for you. If you're a hardcore gamer looking for another Q3A rig at very little cost, this is not your solution. Your solution is to save up some more for another PC. For everyone else interested in a cheap second PC, perhaps to let a family member surf the web or do processor-light things like word processing etc in their own room (or more importantly, without kicking you off YOUR PC), read on.

The product I found to resolve the second PC dilemma is the Buddy B-210 system. This allows you to plug in a second monitor, PS/2 mouse and a PS/2 keyboard into your existing system via a special connector box. This, quite incredibly, allows the creation of a virtual pc which shares the primary PC's memory, CPU and most peripherals including CD-ROM's, printers and modems!

I had actually used the previous B-200 system that was available some years back and I recall that it wasn’t much chop. The new Buddy system is a major improvement. Priced at AUS$299, it represents good value opposed to over AUD$1000 for an entry level name brand PC.

2. http://active-hardware.com/english/reviews/div/b210.htm

Extract:
Several people would like to set up a minicomputer-network at home or at their office whereas others reached already this stage and set up such a network. The latter, quickly realize that the cost is very expensive to carry out such a small network . However, thanks to the BUDDY B-210, these amazing costs are from now on, thing of the past. Indeed, it is as of now, possible to build a network for hardly the cost of a monitor. Let us see together the outcomes of such a realization.

For No. 1 it is priced at AUD$299. Conversion rate is quite close to SGD right?

Dun worry much about my specs.
From what I read, the requirements is quite low.
And I would say my machine is quite new.
eg. Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, etc.

I will talk to the vendor once I can locate one...
