You can't connect a router to a phone socket. If you can do that then it means it's is a modem, not a router.

The 2Wire 1800HG is a modem cum router cum access point. That's why you can just plug in and share your internet connection on wireless.

If you're looking for another such device, I recommend the ASUS WL600g. Not only is it a modem + router + access point, it also has USB ports so you can plug in your printer or web cam or some storage device (thumb drive or HDD) and you can have a print server as well as network storage.

It's about $165 ~ $170. It can be easily found in SLS. MediaPro definitely has but I think Bell Systems can fetch a better price.

Simply put, a modem is how you connect to your ISP either through the phone line or cable point. However, this only allows one internet connection, i.e. one computer which is connected to the modem. If you take a look at a dedicated modem, you'll see a jack (port) to connect to your phone line/cable point and another to connect to your computer LAN card.

A router, more specifically the ones we're talking about for home use (these come with a in-built switch but generally still called routers), allows you to share this single internet connection to computers which you connect to it. It has one LAN jack (port) which you connect to your modem, and then typically 4 other jacks (ports) each to connect to your computers.

An access point simply is to connect a cable network to wireless. Wireless routers as their name suggest comes with an access point in built.

Since your 1800HG is not working, you'll also need to get a ADSL modem in addition to the routers that you're considering. If you ask me, I'll say the WRT54G is really not worth getting. There are cheaper and better routers like from Buffalo.

Oh then you get a "wireless router" can liao. I still won't recommend anything Linksys. They seem overpriced to me, knowing what components are inside. If you want a USB connection on your router to share your printer or for some shared network storage, then you can consider what I got. Else a cheap Buffalo should perform just as well if not better than the WRT54G.
