ASUS Wl-500G Deluxe welcomb Apr 22nd, 07, 01:59 AM #1 (permalink)
From what I've gathered, MediaPro is the only place selling the Deluxe model. Other stores tend to stock only the Premium model. But enough, here are the pics.

Comes in a nice little box which feels surprisingly light.

Big3 warranty card, indicating the local distributor.

Nicely packed inside.

Front of the router. Notice it has afterburner too! Just like the WRT54GS.

The back. Look at the 2 USB ports! Gonna have lots of fun with them.

A curious flap at the side, which opens to reveal...

... nothing! Probably using the same case as some other model.

Mounting holes on the back. But have to buy your own wall mounts.

Cos it comes only with power adapter and a LAN cable.

First thing I did was to flash with the Oleg firmware. It's as easy as updating the firmware, which it in fact is just that. No additional set up needed to get my printer working. Just plug into the USB port, install the printer in Windows, and it works!

Next up I'll be attaching a HDD to it and installing a bit torrent and a scanner server as well, since my printer is one of those multi-function units. No more needing to scan only from one particular PC!!

For about the same cost, who'd still want to get a WRT54GS is beyond me.

I'll probably do a throughput analysis after my exams. Getting seriously side tracked here. heh.

Maybe the flap when open to act as a stand so that you can make the router stand vertically?

Hmm... yah you're right. But it seemed so flimsy I didn't think it was possible.

With what I'm doing to it, I'll probably going to void warranty soon... Anyway I also don't like Linksys RMA policy either. Last time I RMAed my old router, they replaced it with the same defective one claiming that the entire model series is defective.

hmm i think i'll get a wl500g premium.

it has a much higher cpu clock (266mhz), 8mb flash and 32mb ram.
Networking: Thomson ST536v6, AEBS N Gigabit, WRT54GL

yah higher clock, more flash ram, hardware switch, mini-PCI radio. All for $50 more than the deluxe.

oh and one thing. After flashing to 3rd party firmware, you'd have to manually set the QoS and packet shaping. My BF2142 was lagging at 300-500 when my torrents were downloading.

Ahh... you're making me regret saving the $50 and getting the Deluxe.
