I need 802.11a and 802.11g... how? buckwheat May 3rd, 07, 05:50 PM #1 (permalink)
i have been looking at routers that can do dual band a/g so that i can run my laptop on the "g" and my xbox on the "a". the only problem is that a/g dual band routers are few and far between.

could i somehow include an "a" access point that is connected to the router via ethernet cable? would this be easy to setup?

hopefully someone is out there who has done this before!!

A/B/G are flavours of wireless connection. Do not associate them with wired connection.

Can I refer u to this thread as another thread starter is also in search of A+G router? >>>Which A+G Wireless Router?

You can really just buy a G or N router. All routers are backwards compatible :/

that is my thread as well... two different questions.

I want A+G so that I can run my XBox wirelessly over "a" protocol and have dedicated bandwidth and have my laptop run wirelessly over "g" protocol.

I have seen Linksys and Netgear A+G routers but I have not heard good things (I have a Linksys WRT54GL that runs ok though)... was wondering whether I could add an "a" access point to this config to get the same thing?

I dont think the XBox supports "n" so that is out of the question.

I need one that is dual band... ie can run "a" and "g" signals at the same time. Can most routers do this?

there are many of these dual band routers. e.g. the NETGEAR WGU624.

go to mediapro technology (level 5, sim lim square) and ask. they have almost every model of any wireless router.

but a purely wireless A access point plugged into your router will work equally well if u don't want to change routers.

yep... i am using the xbox360 as a media extender, so need 802.11a to provide more bandwidth... will check out mediapro and see what can get.

hey, but the throughput from 802.11a is just marginally less than 802.11g.

in fact if you use pure G-mode with no B devices and disable B protection, 802.11a and 802.11a are on par since they use the same signalling.

unless your 2.4GHz band is crowded, then you can actually use channel 13 legally in Singapore.

but 802.11a and 802.11g run at different frequencies. If i have a dual band router i get both frequencies with 2x (effectively) the bandwidth. one for xbox and one for laptop. rather than xbox and laptop crowding one frequency.
