Very hard. But you should install a DDNS before you go out.

To add on to what hammie suggested: if your router supports it, you can also install a 3rd party firmware that does the updating of ip for you. What router are you using?

Model
S/N Prefix
Stable
White Russian

WRT54G v1.0
CDF0 or CDF1

WRT54G v1.1
CDF2 or CDF3 or CDF4

WRT54G v2
CGN10 (Canada)/CDF5

WRT54G v2.2
CDF7

WRT54G v3
CDF8

WRT54G v3.1 (AU?, DE, FR and UK)
CDF9

WRT54G v4
CDFA

only these versions support linux firmware. check your router's serial number to see if it matches any of those.

you can configure your WRT54G to do DDNS update for dyndns.org out of the box. jsut go to dyndns.org, get an account, open a dynamic DNS host.

then in your router admin go to the DDNS page and fill it up.
Networking: Thomson ST536v6, AEBS N Gigabit, WRT54GL
Portables: MacBook Unibody 2.4GHz

DD-WRT has micro builds that support v5 and v6 WRT54Gs, but due to very limited space and RAM their features are cut down... I think uPnP was only added in a recent beta for example.

Your stock firmware may support dyndns.org, as &d00 said. I'm using a WRT54G too, and got that feature in a firmware update.

Cool. now I'm starting to understand a little more about networking.. thx!

I got it all working.. managed to get a mate in australia to login and test.. all good.. .. Now I can remotely use linux on my PS3!

All except that my biggest hurdle is that they block every port at my workplace.. so I still can't access it from there..

cheers all the same!

Heh good that you got it working.

There are always ways around blocked ports, either by port redirection or VPN I guess.

yeah.. I would like to get around this problem if I can... I even tried a web based vnc viewer..

I'll have to do some more 'research' into redirection and VPN.. dunno how to do either!

Thanks!

The easiest way is to run VNC on port 80 no company would block port 80. if that won't work because of a smarter firewall try port 443
