Should i buy a Macbook or the normal laptop i.e. all other brands?

File system can use Samba and Connecting can just open a SSH connection?

Yes, you need to tell us what you're planning to do with it.

The command-line interface of OS X has quite a steep learning curve, and it doesn't support some unix features by default, so need to install additional components.

If you're not going to do a lot of complex stuff you can get away with using windows-based tools. You'll also get a larger selection of laptops to choose from to match your budget.

Personally I think Macs are grossly over-priced, not to mention more proprietary that Windows.

And if you want to install a gnu linux/unix OS, then I think an x86 based laptop would be more compatible.

Isn't that the reason why they used BSD as a base, so they can avoid GPL and stay proprietary?

Anyway I think TS wants something that can act as a terminal, so I suppose he can get away with using PuTTY or something.
