Starhub Ultimate Problem DarkSuiyoken Aug 26th, 07, 01:33 AM #1 (permalink)
I need some help for a strange problem with the SB6100 Modem I got after I signed up with MaxOnline Ultimate.

My Desktop, which runs Windows XP Professional, connects to the internet fine, with the modem.

But my brother's laptop, which runs Windows XP Home, cannot get an IP from the modem, thus, getting a "Limited or no connectivity" LAN connection. This is when he tried directly connecting to the modem with a LAN cable.

I'm suspecting it is the XP Home/Professional issue, but I might be wrong. I've searched everywhere, and it seems no one has the same problem.

Can anyone help?

I think it's a network configuration problem... is your brother using "acquire network address automatically" in his LAN connection properties? You might want to try setting it to a static IP to see if its a DHCP problem.

did your bro connect his laptop to the modem using the same lan cable as yours?

You have to power off and on modem every time you connect the modem to another device. Otherwise the modem is still bind to the MAC address ofthe last device it was connected to and hence you can't get a new IP for the new device.

Ah, now it works...

But after connecting it to a switch, only one of the 2 computers get the internet connection. I'm guessing I need a router instead of a switch?

Of course ony 1 works connecting to a switch as SH only has subscription plans for 1 IP per modem. A NAT router is needed to share that 1 and only public IP.

In fact, it will remain that the same PC gets the public IP even both connected to switch until modem is reset. Same reason that modem is bind to the MAC address.
