DLink GreenEthernet Switches shard Apr 28th, 08, 06:54 PM #1 (permalink)
I came across these today and bought 3 of the 8 port Gigabit switches as they claim to use about 80% less power than a normal switch.

I currently have 5 3Com 8 port switches and they are always very warm when I touch them. I have replaced 3 of them with the DLink GreenEthernet ones and the difference in temperature is amazing. The DLink ones are cool to the touch.

Just the temperature difference between the 3Com and the DLink switch leads me to think that the DLink is alot more energy efficient.

Good you're gone GREEN! Netgear FS608 (white ones) run cool don't know about saving electric but they don't get hot. I'll wait and see how the new Dlink Gig Green Switches hold out as SmallnetBuilder reported on them and said they don't save any better then the one that are not green.

I guess you would have to go all GREEN including the router to really save on electric but how much.. Green surg, green everything. Well time will tell.. Good Luck Mr Green!

I am very sure that it uses less power just from the heat dissipated. The 3 switches are cool to the touch compared to the 3Com. Furthermore, my air conditioner does not need to work as hard.

So far I know, If you happeded to open the normal old D-link switch, you will find its power supply unit actually use IC chips ( high efficiency)to first convert the input 12V dc to 2.5V DC and then supply the main circuit. I am sceptical the claimed Green switch will save more energy.

Which model u talking? As far as those few port network switch are of concern, they get the DC source direct from adapter. And even then, most IC don't take in supply of 2.5Vdc.

The Green Switch powers down ports that are not in use or if the connected equipment is powered off. The only issue I can think of is whether you can do a WoL on a computer that's connected to the switch since the accompanying port should be powered off.

i checked out the chipset info from smallnet builder n gotten more info abt the chips
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30407/55/
Vitesse VSC7398
SPECIFICATIONS:
25 MHz LVTTL reference clock
1.2 V core power supply
3.3 V interface power supply

my to cents: these energy saving seems only effective on a large scale basis eg 16< port on active production

I use old black d-LINK des-1005D and Edimax 5 port switch
I 've checked and found both board are similar.
I happeded to know when I accidently plug in 9V AC power to the Edimax switch which requare 12V DC,and spoiled the DC convert unit, late I figured out the power supply and bypass the convert unit, use 2.5V dc supply instead, working fine.

If I understand correctly, the new "green" switches do 2 things.

1. They shut down ports that are not in use.

2. They detect cable length and use the appropriate signal strength instead of assuming the cable is max length (100m?) and using the max power.

I will see when my power bill comes next month.

Uh yeah I can do that but that is besides the point.

The air conditioner is not there to cool the switches, they just happen to be in the same room. If we are going down that road, I don't really need 40 ports in my house and therefore I should just not use any switches and save even more power:p

I started this topic about the switches using less power and not as a "green" movement.
