Starhub having packet loss? Cheeseycase Aug 9th, 09, 01:45 AM #1 (permalink)
Hey guys. For the whole day of today, my starhub internet connection having horrible packet loss of 25 to 50%.

Called starhub in the morning they ask me go down to Vivo or PS to change my modem... Im using a SB6100 Motolora.

I did a PingPlotter test, not very sure how to view it. So turning to you guys for your expertise and maybe some recommandations.

This problem is also occuring not too long ago when i tried to enter tf2.

Hope to hear your reply and recommandations on weather it is mine or Starhub's fault and should go change my modem... and oh yeah Happy National Day...

Look's like you're getting flooded, cut the power off your modem + router if you're using for 15 seconds and then power them on and check your net again

Either you're getting flooded or you got jacked and some program is flooding your router upload causing massive packet loss after the 10th hop

Thanks to blackgoofguy for this useful post! Aug 9th, 09, from Cheeseycase

Actually, you cant really guage what's happening base on hop 10 because at different time of the day you can be going through different route. So it is also possible that this node that you are going thru are having issue. But however even u got time out may not necessarily means the node is not responding because it ignore icmp echo pacs.

If you had called SH and checked signal feed to your SB6100 is adequate is recommended

- isolate connection by doing direct con to a pc (remember to powercycle sb6100, powercycle means totally off from plug)

If direct con to pc has no issue, you have wish to limit your upload rate for other applications like p2p or other filesharing tools on other pc and try again with router.

- avoid tracing to one site try other site like Yahoo! as well another us site to ensure the losses not due to a particular route

Let's say if yahoo got no issue you may need to supply sh with the tracert result at different time of the day to allow them to "optimize" i remember a v troublesome n slow process.

Lastly hope you can find out the cause of the problem.

Gd luck and happy troubleshooting

Hey again.

I followed your recommandations, like powercycle, connecting directly to PC and connect to yahoo.com instead.

Ive got no P2P software on acctually. Might I ask err, how do i perform a tracert and submit to SH.

Hi cheesy cake,

Intermittent problems are v hard to trace. So far how regular ?? Because if is just like once in a blue moon you may wish to isolate this issue.

You can go to utilities.starhub.com they have tracert and other tools.

Traced it to hop 6-7, between 203.117.244.1 and 129.250.12.69

This is the border between starhub and another ISP. Feel like making a report. Whether or not they fix it will be in starhub's hands. There is 10% loss through this hop, which is an unacceptable amount from a network engineering perspective.

Anyone know how to make a report without having to fill in the inane details asked by the noob frontline service people? Not really their fault... just that they ask the wierdest off topic questions out of their playbook.

I have already carried out a battery of ICMP tests. Only the hop 7 gateway exhibits packet loss so it is NOT my router or modem. Not that they will understand that.

Err it happens just recently, occurs this within this month... Im guessing, it could be because i left my computer turned on for torrenting few times this month. Could that be the reason?

Because you said that I just needed to powercycle my modem, I did that and well it cleared up some inconviences like sudden disconnection.

But, for example like yesterday, while i was on tf2, my modem just disconnected and restarted. So im not really sure, if today i get the same issue again, ill goto PS and get my modem changed.

Hope this clears up... i really wish it isnt the modem fault -.-" dont want to have to wait for my turn at PS.

Hi cheesy,

hmmm, torrenting doesnt really affect your modem directly unless u do full upload. Do limit your upload speed to 1/2 of your maximum if you had not done so i typically only put max @ 40kb/sec.

But if you are using router i do remember cases of router getting hanged and needs a power cycle. To be sure , u may wish to test BT and gaming 2gether on one pc w/o router.

Recently i got a cheapo dir300 router with many issues too (regret).
Btw wats your upload rate for your bt and wat's your current plan ??

I know there has been bad weather in Taiwan but I think that is an excuse.

This is the first hop out of starhub towards the U.S. It is NTT:

--- 129.250.12.69 ping statistics ---
1500 packets transmitted, 1382 received, 7% packet loss, time 539267ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 246.721/357.085/761.759/99.159 ms, pipe 2, ipg/ewma 359.751/596.631 ms

You see 7% packet loss. It was 10% last night. Funny thing is, it was 0% this morning at 6am. I experienced the same thing a few days ago. I don't think the broken cable is magically mending itself in the early morning when Starhub's service isn't oversubscribed.

I hesitate to phone starhub because I don't need some helpful person telling me to restart everything. I get zero ping loss (not a single packet dropped out of 10K) within Starhub all the way to the last hop. After that, no matter what the next hop is (Japan, HK) I get close to 10% loss in the evening.

And I just signed a 2 year contract....

Perhaps everyone can plan a day & time to call in with the same problem to try to get their attention!
