Experiment with broadcast storm p|sangp|sang Aug 22nd, 09, 03:33 PM #1 (permalink)
A little backtrack. so replaced a fried psu on a 16port netgear gig switch and was wondering how to get it under full load in both switching and power. Then it struck me, A loop broadcast storm.

Setting up the rig. Connect up all the 16 ports from the netgear to a 24port procurve. Now thats a broadcast radiation waiting to happen

The laptop will broadcast a dhcp query which will cause the snowball to start rolling. About a million packets is being pushing through the 32gig switching fabric per sec.
The laptop is being overwhelmed by the broadcast.

An hour later still running. The switch runs toasty warm power meter indicates approx 26w(specs states 25w max tough).

Closing thoughts: Broadcast storms can causes severe network meltdown. Tough it can be some what a useful stress testing means.

Nothing like bpdu loop protect enabled, with MST spanning tree.

This is harder to troubleshoot compared to having a old router being plugged back to the network and watching multiple PCs going to the wrong router, since both old and new routers have the same configuration. Experienced this about a few months back onsite, took about an hour to figure out. ~_~

ahh yes but we're talking about cheap unmanaged switches here. where they are likely to be found in branch offices, SMB and sohos
