Possible to use 2700HGV as a wireless switch? Pinnacle Aug 24th, 09, 08:12 AM #1 (permalink)
I am not sure if this has been asked before or if this is the right section to ask, if this is wrong, do kindly let me know and direct me to the thread or right section.

I have a Netgear WPNT834, however the wireless doesn't work anymore. Tried everything including upgrading firmware, just doesn't work, so I gave up on it as a wireless. I am using it was a wired router.

I recently got a 2700HGV-2 from my Uncle. He switched from SingNet to Starhub so he doesn't want this anymore, it works fine.

My connection is a StarHub Premium

Question is, is it possible for me to utlize the wireless function of the 2700HGV-2?

I tried setting up the network this way:

cable modem <direct connection> Main Computer <via the USB type B plug> 2700HGV-2 (wireless switch?) > Another desktop and a laptop via wireless
Which didn't work, not sure why.

However I read from Azacamis - InfoTech: Using 2Wire adsl wireless router with Starhub cable that it is possible to do it this way:

cable modem <> ethernet router <> 2 wire

In the comments, someone mentioned she managed to get it to work via another similar method. However I am quite clueless as to how she did it, whether is was: cable modem <> 2 wire (as a wired/wireless switch)

Can anyone suggest how I can get this to work with the above mentioned hardware, with the simplest configuration and the steps involved?

Thanks in advance!

Modem <--> WPNT834 <--> 2Wire.

The modem connects you to starhub, the wpnt834 as a wired router WILL handle the routing, and the 2wire as the Wireless AP(WAP).

The steps are as the article.

Which method in the article? The method suggested in the main article , the method the articles writer suggested to Celine or the method suggested by the user Celine?

Coz the method suggested in the main article suggests:

cable modem <> ethernet router <> 2 wire

What you need to do is to turn off the DHCP function on the 2Wire. 0pen a Web browser and access the 2Wire user interface. Click the Home Network tab, then Advanced Settings link under the tab to open the Edit Advanced Home Network Settings page. In the Private Network section, untick Enable DHCP check box. If you are not sure on how to log in to the 2Wire, you download the user guide at http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/5100...-000.Rev.A.pdf. After that, just plug the cable modem to the any of the LAN port on the 2Wire and you can connect wirelessly to it to surf.

hi, the Enable DHCP check box is oredi unchecked by default...
I tried setting 2wire into bridge mode and change the connection to direct IP and then reboot the device. Now can connect as wireless point for starhub connection.

Unsure about the 3rd method, but 2nd method seems to be:

cable modem <> 2wire <> home network via wired or wireless

Which 2 are same steps? Sorry har, I abit gong XD

Main article allows us to use the 2wire as a wired/wireless switch, which follows your configuration of: cable modem <> Netgear <> 2wire

His suggestion to Celine is to turn off DHCP and use the 2wire as a wireless switch, but the config is: cable modem <> 2wire

Celines method, which she wants it as a wireless switch, which probably worked for her since she gave an alternative method. Involves turning the 2wire into bridge mode 1st then changing it to a direct IP as described in Virtual Private Networks (VPN) - How to put 2WIRE 1701 DSL Modem into Bridge Mode!
Log in to the router's mdc page
Under “Broadband Link - Configure” on the left,
Set “ATM VPC Search” to DISABLED
Set “Connection Type” to DIRECT IP
Click SUBMIT, wait for reset

Log in again to the router's mdc page
Under “Advanced - Configure Services”,
UNCHECK “enable routing”, click “submit.

This also follows the 2nd config of: cable modem <> 2wire

So I am abit lost. Sorry for being 'blur'

Setting to bridge mode is not applicable in your case.
If what you stated in your original post still stands, you should follow azacamis' guide instead.
