Sending large files online? CJMclean Sep 8th, 09, 06:59 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi guys,

Dunno where to post so mod pls move accordingly.

I have been searching but i cant seem to find a clear answer to the problem. I might need to send large and by large i mean huge files over the internet.
File sizes can range between 20GB to 100GB(HD video).

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Paying for any service like that is not an issue as long as can reach the UK from Singapore in the shortest space of time and as securely as possible.

Cheers fellas
Cecil

Bittorrent won't work if this is point to point traffic.

100GB eh. That's a long shot. The UK/Singapore public internet connection is screwed up. You'd be lucky to get 100kbps constant even with a monster plan like MOL Ultimate.

If you want any decent connection speeds, and are willing to fork out for it, you're gonna have to look for a corporate WAN reseller like C&W or AT&T. These guys run their own private international WANs. They charge top dollar tho; a 1Mbps MPLS endpoint each in Singapore and London could cost you upwards of US$2000 a month. This is just an estimate. You'd prolly want to approach a sales officer for a proper quote. You of course will get what you pay for. 24x7x365 support, and unadulterated point to point connectivity.

Honestly, it's probably more cost effective working out something with DHL to have the data couriered over on BluRay discs.

haha my idea was to to have 10 of your company's pc seeding the file ... if the receivant is the only party downloading it, won't BT be good enough?

cheers guys.
am doing ground work research now so nothing's been decided as yet.

there is a service at sendthisfiles.com but i suppose u are right, it'll take ages.

BT could work but i dont know if that is formal enough as the client is a big company and the stigma with BT is still rather negative.

will chk the WAN resellers but it probably too expensive. Thanks DF!
DHL is an option but send it over a weekend and with a deadline of monday morning is a rather nerve wrecking option.

try this instead?
WAN Accelerator. This might help maximize transfer via larger packet size.

Mmmm I hadn't considered WAN acceleration. That might work.

Also, Why don't speak to Starhub, Singtel, Sprint and Qala directly to discuss the options based on your requirements?

Since you are looking at commercial traffic, I believe it can be prioritised over consumer traffic.

It takes two to tango of course. Whatever you set up in Singapore will be pointless if similar measures are not taken in the UK to ensure there aren't any bottlenecks.

It sounds like your operations are very time sensitive. Please ensure you plan for disaster recovery should there be unexpected internet congestion due to cable damage or malicious software.

YouSendIt works for files up to 2GB. More than that no go.
