Networking Questions... elspeth Sep 11th, 09, 02:54 AM #1 (permalink)
Hi networking experts,

I hope and appreciate if any of you knowledgeable ones could help me out with the following:

Firstly, is it even possible to bridge using my 2wire 2701hgv-e and a SMC 7904WBRA if i'm on Mio Voice? Meaning my Tel line needs to be connected to the 2wire. after bridging would my home phones still work?

Then i'd like to ask for bridging between my 2wire 2701hgv-e and a SMC 7904WBRA wat are the steps required in configuring both the 2wire and SMC? Do take note the SMC is a modem and router together. i'd like to use the SMC purely as a router and disabling the modem part. how do i do so?
do i folow the steps taken here? that's only for the 2wire part...

how bout my SMC part? how do i configure my SMC to dial in using PPPoE and disabling its modem function but retaining its routing function? Do i need to change/setup my SMC's mac or ip address? is the WAN menu still applicable?

also, for the cable connection between 2wire and SMC does it need to be crossed or just the regular straight cables?

and does any1 know where i can buy the RJ45 plastic plugs from sim lim sq ? or sim lim tower?

I cannot figure out why you would want to retain the SMC's routing function if you are already running MIO through the 2Wire... Unless you have something nefarious in mind like a honeypot for wireless thieves =3

Therefore before we start, lets make sure your defintitions are correct. In layman terms...

Router - A device that connects your home network to the outside network. Consumer routers have only 2 ports, WAN, and LAN.

Switch/hub - A device that allows multiple devices on the same network to communicate with each other. Switches usually have 4 or more ports.

Routing Switch - This defines most consumer "routers" on the market today. They are both a router and a switch combined into one chassis. Your SMC is one such device.

I believe you want to use the 4 ports on the SMC as a switch. To do so, connect an uplink cable between one of the 4 switchports to your one of the LAN ports on the 2Wire and you are good to go, no configuration needed.

However if you did truly mean router in the WAN/LAN sense, I must say that the SMC is an ADSL router with an RJ11 WAN port. There is no way to use it as a regular RJ45 based WAN router.

You can buy RJ45 male and female connectors at SLS and SLT. I recommend SLT if you are buying more than a few since the things are cheaper at SLT. A few cents cheaper.

DF

Edit:

You may need a cross cable to connect the two devices if the 2Wire/SMC don't support auto-MDIX (Anyone know if they do? I have no experience with these products) Try a regular cable first. If the lights don't come on you will need to borrow/buy a cross cable to test things out.

just setup your smc as per normal with rj45 connection from mio box lan to the smc wan port.

your pc , laptop or network stuff all plug into the smc.

the mio box able to have multiple connection request.

im having similar setup but with miotv.

SMC has a RJ11 WAN port. It is an ADSL router. You have to connect the LAN cable to one of the 4 LAN ports.

cannot work leh i tried the setup alrdy connecting from 2wire lan port to my smc lan port. and yes my smc is an adsl router comes with a built in adsl modem so dun hav wan port.

is there a way to configure it such that it works according to the instructions here? i tried every single way i could think of but still there wasn't any internet access via the smc. tried disabling routing on 2wire, entering dns svr into smc and without..., setting ip addr of smc such that its 192.168.1.1 to be in the same subnet as 2wire... 192.168.1.254... etc...

is it even possible? or what dragon fire said is correct?

Important. Do the LAN lights come on when you plug the two devices together? If not, you need a cross cable.

DF is right.
That HWZ post is meant for using with routers that do not have an integrated modem.

What you need to do is:
  1. Return the 2Wire to the original configuration (Ignore if you didn't modify the settings)
  2. Set your SMC router so that the WAN connection is disabled. Or set to STATIC IP and use a Random Class C address like 192.168.123.1 if you cannot disable the WAN interface.
  3. Set the SMC Router to use a different LAN IP ADDR on the same subnet as the 2Wire.
  4. Disable DHCP server on the SMC router (Very impt! The 2Wire needs to be DHCP server for this to work.)
  5. Connect the LAN port of the SMC to the LAN port of the 2Wire (Preferably via a Cross-cable). I can't remember if either supports Auto-MDIX

My bad. I forgot to tell you to turn off the SMC's DHCP server.

Ok. You CANNOT do that... It is a technical limitation. The router needs to be connected to the WAN interface, the correct type of which is lacking in your SMC.

Can you tell us why you want to do this? You'd just be adding another hop to your network. I can't think of any functional benefit to Internet connectivity you gain by using the SMC.

Intermittent connection? Random reboots? Something that appears to point to a hardware fault?

not any of those, tks for expressing yr concern. well maybe 1 of those.

at certain hr i'll have major lag spike. this happens everyday when i'm connected to US svrs. most days. and got pattern.

no intermittent connection.

then another prob is when one of my household desktops is being turned on or resumed from sleep, screensaver... will also cause me to have lag spike. this is no part of the traceroute from sg servers to US.
