That's the price you pay when you're getting an original replacement part from the manufacturer. You can actually just buy an equivalent (or possibly better) from SLT for about $50 if you're willing to strip the UPS apart and swap the connections accordingly.

As I've mentioned, it's used for PABX/ IP-PABX systems. Which, if you choose to use, will be powering your phones. So in the event of a power outage, you still get telephony services. Of course, if you use POTS then it isn't a concern.

When they do, it can be quite erm... Disastrous (in a company).

Last incident I know of involved UPS batteries failing for both main and shadow server clusters despite bi-annual disaster recovery exercises.
Apparently, some goons simply forgot to actually verify that the batteries would hold their charge long enough for the backup generators to kick in and stabilize when they had their exercise.

LOL sounds familiar. Generators run only once or twice a year often have trouble kicking in when they are needed. You get stuff like pigeons or rats nesting in the exhaust pipes. You should see the gensets they are installing at the new office complex in Alexandra. Last I checked they had 8 container sized generators installed in the basement.

All lined up in a row facing another building. Like the engine ports of a V8 lol.

Pity they didn't put in a multi MW gas turbine generator. I think some wafer fabs have those for emergencies.

Let me see if I can cop a picture.

LOL.. The main question I have is why the Shadow cluster and Main Clusters were not under separate grids?

My dad was just glad he tendered his early retirement 1 month prior to the fiasco. Not that it was his problem anyway.. Different organization anyway but still affected. Fortunately, they kept some of their own mail exchange servers internally.
