Bandwidth Throttling Discussion Chrisat Oct 2nd, 09, 02:38 PM #1 (permalink)
I was discussing with some friends about local connection speed and it was mentioned that local ISP does not appear to have any guidelines with regards to what they can do about bandwidth throttling or traffic shaping.

Naturally it's not possible for ISP not to throttle excessive bandwidth usage especially for those heavy P2P users, but what is reasonable and what isn't?

What do you feel is acceptable or unacceptable throttling/shaping policies?

It means to reduce your maximum speed.

Thanks for pointing it out

Looks like both major ISP will only throttle by protocol.

Would it be acceptable if this changes in the future to a blanket throttle on the entire connection when the faster networks become available and direct downloads or streaming from Voice/Video services become increasingly heavier?

What has tunneling gotta do with bandwidth ?

once its tunneled the throttler cannot identify the type of packet

This is why I believe eventually the ISPs will throttle heavy users by their accounts regardless of the type of traffic. Heavy users will therefore get less speed even if they paid for a higher bandwidth account.

Actually I don't really bother if they throttle my traffic or not ... If they don't throttle my traffic, my HDD is going get too full and I might find myself buying bigger and bigger HDDs to store more and more stuff since there is zero throttling ...

However, if they throttle ... my HDDs get full but not too frequent hence I get breathing space to save money and buy bigger HDDs

Imagine they donch throttle ... then one night I sleep , wake up ... my 500GB HDD full liao ... Its a disaster leh ... Everyday do nothing but spend money upgrading HDDs
