Homeplug in my house abuddlah Oct 23rd, 09, 10:02 AM #1 (permalink)
Hi, due to the bad design of my house. I cannot receive good signal strength in my room for my wireless. My router and modem is place in my sister's room which is the other end of my house.

But i read through some threads and people are recommending Homeplug. I just wanna ask a few questions.

- IF i buy Homeplug and i put in my sister's room. Must it connect to the router? Or can i place it with Modem- router- Homeplug- a/c wall socket- My room- Homeplug- router then my room get good strength?

- How much is it and which shop at SL you all recommend?

Homeplug is around $80-$90 for the 200mbps one. Don't get anything less than that.

You need at least a pair to work.

Your home plug would need to be connected like this

modem --> router --> Homeplug1-->A/C (Sis Room) ---> A/C (Ur Room)--> Homeplug2-->PC

the $80-90 is for 1 or 1 pair? Which shop should i get? But then, in my room, im using laptop so i want it to be wireless. So is it possible to put a router in my room? Cause i want my living room and other place in my house to be wifi enabled.

in that case you need a wireless access point in your room and not a router.
$80-90 is for one. any shop that gives you the best price will do.

I suggest you to put the router @ a location whereby all areas of your house can roughly get an even or fair distribution of the wifi signal.

You will need two homeplugs as reminiscent mentioned in the posting above. Unless you are willing to lay your own UTP cables (Starhub does not do this) you are out of choices.

Edit: Something important to consider. Do you live in a condo, HDB flat, or landed property? This has to do with the electrical connectivity for your home. Homeplugs work well only with single phase power. HDB flats are all on single phase. Some condos and a good number of landed properties use 3-phase power. In this case, homeplugs will work only within the same phase unless you purchase more to bridge the phases.

Take a photo of the power meter and post it here. You can tell by the type of power meter.

i dont think i can take a picture of the power meter cause it's locked. But is it possible to still use homeplug even if it's not 1phase?

And let's say my house is 1phase. so is it possible to have this connection

internet-modem-router-homeplug in sister room- homeplug in my room- router- wifi for laptop

is it possible to have a router in my room?

Yes that will work if the two routers sit in different subnets. Why do you want something like this tho? The average user will not have a need for more than one router.

What you need is a switch in your room.

Modem -> router in sis' room -> homeplug 1 ---> homeplug2 -> switch in your room.

switch in your room -> (your pc, wireless ap in your room)

That way your wireless network coverage is extended.

If you MUST have two different routers, make sure both use different subnets or routing will fail miserably.

Take a look at your electrical circuit breaker.
Each power phase has 1 RCCB (it's twice as fat as the other switch units and has a rating on it, usually between 0.020mA and 0.040mA for residential properties) beside the main breaker.
If you only see 1 row of breakers or only 1 RCCB, then you only have 1 phase of power.

Its only possible if the modem is connected to the router via homeplug if the cable point is far away at the living room. Then everyone will be on wireless.
