Talking ATI 5850 vs Crossfire in 34 benches and Q9550 vs Core i7 860 in 23 benches all HD rec

    Hello again Vr-Zone friends.

As promised I am publishing my Crosffire results today.

The systems specs are as follows:

    Intel Core i7-860 @4.0Ghz
    Asus Maximus III Formula
    Geil 4GB DDR3-2133 modules
    Enermax Galaxy 850W PSU
    Windows 7 X64

    Intel Q9550 @4.0GHz
    Asus P5Q Deluxe
    OCZ 4GB DDR2-1000 modules
    Nexus 850W PSU
    Windows 7 X64

    Sapphire ATI 5850 @ 1Ghz
    XFX ATI 5850 @1Ghz

First of all I would like to make clear that the main focus of this thread, are the crossfire results. Especially the Core i7 single 5850 vs dual 5850 part. There are some CPU comparisons as well, but these should be regarded as an added bonus, in continuance to my Core i7 vs Q9500 benchmarks, with a single card. No need to start a new thread for these!

The benchmarks used were the following:

    34 gaming benchmarks for the "Core i7 860+single 5850 vs Core i7 860+dual 5850" comparison.
    22 gaming benchmarks for the "Q9550+single 5850 vs Q9550+dual 5850" comparison.
    23 gaming benchmarks for the "Core i7 860+dual 5850 vs Q9550+dual 5850" comparison.

The ugly part is that in five single card benchmarks the Core i7-860 was overclocked to 4.2Ghz. These were my first benchmarks but then I decided that the extra voltage was not worth it and dropped to 4.0Ghz for the rest of the benchmarks. These five benchmarks are (GTA IV, SERIOUS SAM HD, DIRT 2, AVATAR, UNIGINE HEAVEN).

One more ugly thing is that this test spanned across three different driver sets, namely Catalyst 9.10, 9.11 and 9.12. Catalyst 9.11 was used in the five aforementioned 4.2Ghz Core i7 single card benchmarks, as well as GTA IV, SERIOUS SAM HD, DAWN OF WAR II and DIRT 2 for the Q9550 single card system. The rest are all with Catalyst 9.12 for the Core i7 and Catalyst 9.10 for the Q9550. All Q9550 Crossfire tests have been made with Catalyst 9.12.

Yes I know that you don't do gaming CPU/GPU comparison with different gfx card driver sets, but hey, it is widely known that Catalyst 9.11 or 9.12 brought no significant performance differences, so that's why I decided to use them anyway. In any case, this thread focuses on the Core i7-860 Single Card vs Crossfire results which are all made with Catalyst 9.12!

The benchmark results will be presented two and a half-fold (lol), meaning, there is an excel spreadsheet in image form, with which I calculated the percentage differences of the systems, there are also a few good ol' bar charts and I will upload the actual Excel file later, since it contains all the benchmarks with Hyperlinks that lead to the respective video in Youtube.

I decided to drop the vBulleting text with the video links, since it was such a pain. The Excel file is much more manageable and I will be able to use these benches more easily in the future. So since the excel part is used twice, you get that two and a /half part!

    Enough talk. Enjoy the benchmarks.

First are the Excel Images (multiuploaded).

    Second come the Graphs

And last but not least the actual Excel file with the Hyperlinks

The most interesting thing about these benchmarks is the disparity between the Q9550 and i7 Crossfire results in some games. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this psolord.

Excellent compilation. I'm amazed at the patience you have.

    Indeed!

    Glad you noticed!

Who said that ATI does not scale well in Crysis?

Overall the scaling is very very decent!
