RV770 has 800 stream processors newzhunter Mar 13th, 08, 11:13 AM #1 (permalink)
RV770 is 160SP (32*5) per array and there are a total of 5 arrays

Well you can have all the stream processors you want, but if the stream processors aren't optimized or the game developers do not utilize them, they're pretty much useless except for just bragging rights.

Thats way too much. 480SP sounds more reasonable at 55nm with the doubled TMU units.

i'm sure they know what they're doing. ATI has already learned from the 2900 fiasco and 3800 revisions. whether Nvidia owners like to admit it or not, the 3870 is a badass video card. if ATI thinks more SP's is better then fewer but faster SP's, i'll keep an open mind. looking forward to leaked benchies in a couple months.

All current graphics cards are in beta experimental testing, can't even run any game at constant 60 fps.
The next time i buy a graphics card it will be a card where the rendering engine runs directly on the GPU to deliver constant 60 fps bypassing all that noobish DirectX, OpenGL and graphics pipeline.

If these stream processors are no more efficent then the ones on the rv670 thats still 250% more processing power. Rumour has it these are just more optimized versions of the rv670 ones. So what ever rv670 runs rv770 will run much much better. Also these chips are dirt cheap to make cause they are even samller than the 55 nm version of the g92b. Imagine what rv770 x2 is like.

640SPs are still the best estimate.
2x the FLOPs, but this is mostly BS talk. Shaders aren't enough to give you 2x+ perf.

The real substance would be the TMUs, where ATI's current chips lack in. If RV670 just had 32 instead of 16, I do think that the G92-112 would have a hard time in most games besides Crysis.

Oh, and the ROPs need to have at least an ass or something.

Haha... more rumors and speculations.

I'll believe it when actual review come out. Until that, dust in the wind.

This sounds completely ridiculous. 800 Stream Processors is just way to much, and not the direction that ATI needs to take the R600 architecture.

I still believe that those first leaks of RV770 having 16 ROPs, 32 TMUs, and 480 Stream Processors seems right. Back with the R580, ATI adopted a 3-to-1 ratio of pixel shader processors to TMUs. The core had 16 TMUs, and therefore 48 pixel shader processors (each of which had three ALU units). When ATI moved to the R600, they went with a 4-to-1 ratio of unified shader processors to TMUs. The R600 had 16 TMUs and 64 unified shader processors, each having 5 ALUs. Since NVIDIA counted each ALU in its G80 as a Stream Processor, ATI did the same. So, 64x5 equaled 320 SPs total.

Now, if RV770 had 32 TMUs and 480 SPs, it would mean that ATI went back to their 3-to-1 ratio, which I personally believed was a much more balanced and efficient architecture. A 3:1 ratio with 32 TMUs would mean having 96 unified shader processors, again with 5 ALUs each, for 480 SPs total.
