AMD Shanghai 45nm Opteron up close bullydog Apr 12th, 08, 07:19 PM #1

We had a chance to see AMD's four quad-core 45nm processor, codenamed Shanghai, and we can report that the new CPU has 4x64KB data, 4x64KB instructions, 4x512KB date and a massive 6MB of L3 cache.

We don’t have the frequencies, we don’t have anything better than that it comes in second half of 2008 and that it needs 1.150V to run. It will be able to go over 3GHz, but we don’t know the exact speed.

Enjoy the pictures.

3GHz..hopefully they'll really make it work. I still remember when AMD were showing 3GHz Phenom X4 like a year ago..and now their best model is 2.5GHz and some models have trouble even with their reference clock speeds.

I hope they have done some architectural changes with 45nm processors since K10 loses against Core 2 in MHz/performance-ratio and these Shanghai-processors will fight against Nehalems

People are clocking the B3 phenoms at 3.5ghz and passing all benchies.

Phenom also scale better with frequency, a 4+ghz phenom will probably beat the same frequency C2Q.

With what kind of coolers those 3.5GHz numbers are achieved with Phenom? These new Penryn C2Qs go to 3.5-4.0GHz with decent air cooling solution.

And in what software does Phenom scale better and how much? 3dMark and other synthetic benches show pretty good scaling, but real life tests doesn't.

4GHz Phenom..well with 45nm and overclocked to max with water cooling perhaps.. but against similar Intel system it would have to fight against 4.5GHz quad.

You did read the line that said

didn't you?

You do realize that 4GHz != 4.5GHz? We all know Intel can overclock better. His point was AMD's scaling with frequency was better. I mean no offense but I just felt your argument was a little out of point.
A blade cuts both ways. So why take the risk? Stab instead.

Of course. He were also talking about overclocking and how it could make things better for Phenom. My point was that with same trouble used to overclock C2Q it won't be 4GHz vs. 4GHz fight.. since C2Q would be at 4.5GHz.

I also asked that he would show this scaling thing.

clock for clock, B3 phenoms have higher 3D Marks score than Yorkfield.

Well I know how AMD user feels; I have had 7 AMD processors and 3 Intel..
---

It's nice that in 3dMark Phenom B3 has better clock for clock ratio. What about real life performance? Phenom's problems haven't been it's 3dMark performance..not even with reference clock speeds.
