GT200 folds 3 times faster than RV670 newzhunter May 23rd, 08, 05:07 PM #1 (permalink)

GeForce GTX 280 is going to be a mighty beast. The GT200 core impressed us from the very beginning in matters of raw performance. Alas there have been little information on the real-life performance of the card, other than statements that it runs Crysis fine at certain settings and that it scores 7000 points in the Vantage Extreme profile. We've been provided some more solid information based on the performance in Stanford's Folding@Home client. A slide recently presented says that GeForce GTX 280 will be capable of folding slightly more than 500 mol/day, which is three times more than what Radeon HD 3870 can do, about 170 mol/day (according to the slide), or five times more than PlayStation 3; 100 mol/day.

I hope it would be over three times faster than single HD3870 in games

Oh yes. I nearly forgot about Crysis performance at high IQ and res.

See that green eye icon on the top right?

This is a marketing graph slide. No thanks.

I'll wait for actual reviews again. Right now the only thing I'm interested in is actual product shipping/release dates.

Honestly why are people expecting 2x-3x the performance of X card.. the best we get is 25~50% performance gap at best case scenario compared to the top end cards now.

i was starting to think the GT200 was going to be invincible, but this slide makes me wonder now. who cares about Folding@Home? i wonder if they're bragging about its folding abilities because they aren't 100% it will dominate on games? the last two cards to come from Nvidia have been disappointing... makes you wonder.

The problem with the comparison is that the CPU, GPU and PS3 clients all work on different types of work units. There are some tasks that are still done exclusively on the CPU client due to precision and the flexibility of the programming model. The PS3 can do a bit more than what the ATI/AMD GPU client can but there are still some limitations.

Though the jump from the Radeon HD 3870 to the GT200 chip is rather impressive.

So, it folds 3x RV670? RV770 is suposed to be 1.25x 9800gtx, wich is 0.5x GT200. R700 wil probably fold something like 1.25 GT200! simple math.

The last two cards can't even be considered as successors to the 8800GTX. I would say the 8800GT/X is still the best card on the market for performance/price, after all, it did dominate the top end of the market for 2 years, and that is a long time for a PC component.
So why not bash ATI/AMD for being so lame that they couldn't beat an Nvidia card for 2 years?

i dont know why you tyhink this, look at previous gens of card

nvidia the 6800U was 2x as fast as 5950. 7800GTX was a good 75% faster than 6800U. 8800GTX was 2x as fast as 7900GTX. the 9800 was the only time it has been a small increase.

ATi is the same way. the X800 was 2x as fast as 9800. X1800 was 2x as fast as that. the 2900 was around 60% faster than the X1950XTX. the only one that hasnt been was the 3870 which was only slightly faster than the 2900...most of the time
