Ready for 300W, Three-Slot Graphics Cards? newzhunter Jun 13th, 08, 12:23 AM #1

Tired of two-slot graphics cards dominating your system internals? Bad news, then: the PCI Express SIG is preparing for three-slot graphics cards that may consume up to 300 watts just by themselves.

The PCI Special Interest Group is holding a press conference in a little over an hour, detailing the shift to PCI Express 3.0 in roughly 2010, and improvements to the external cabling specification that allow for external graphics solutions for notebooks and other interesting design ideas.

Besides the 2x3 connector defined in the 150W Graphics Spec 1.0, a new 2x4 connector is being defined for delivering power to the 225/300W cards, the SIG said.

They should release PCI-E 2.5 to increase power from the PCI-E port. 75watts is not enough, even though they said PCI-E 3.0 would give 150watts from just the motherboard, I think they should release it now because by the time they release 3.0, cards will not require 150, but maybe triple.

and motherboards will be 10mm thick to deliver power trough them. LOL

When we hit this upper limit of how much power a graphics card can consume, moore's law will start failing. It looks like that will be pretty soon.

Well, for that reason, multithreading were used instead of blindly increasing frequency clocks.

Yeah, with cards like the 9600 GT and 8800 GT we should have at least a minimum of 150W with PCI-E 2.0, so they can be powered entirely by the motherboard.

A 75W limit puts a very hard limit on performance. Since you limited to things like the 8600 GTS as your fastest card.

3d graphics cards are already mulithreaded by the definition, so there is nothing to be gained from that.
