Archos details new Platinum tablet range, iPad and iPad Mini 'clones' included VRNews Oct 4th, 13, 04:46 PM #1

Aside from entering the smartphone arena with a number of fairly intriguing products (especially from a pricing standpoint), Archos has recently cranked up its tablet volumes, even going so far as to tackle niches than no one knew existed.

But the OEM is not all about eccentricity, which is why the mainstream Platinum slate family has very recently been enriched. With not one, not two, but three new gizmos, all up for pre-orders stateside already and due out in a matter of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’m pretty sure you’ll notice two of the three fresh Platinums look oddly familiar. Why? Because they’re clearly intended as budget-friendly iPad and iPad Mini alternatives. With out-the-box Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
The 97b Platinum HD actually comes with a display that is by all intents and purposes identical to the one on the iPad 4, both in terms of size (9.7 inches) and resolution (2,048 x 1,536 pixels). And guess what, Archos’ tab is even lighter (640 pounds) and skinnier (9 mm) than its far too strong rival, albeit chances are that will come at the expense of sturdiness and reliability.

Meanwhile, the 80b Platinum has its own quarrel with the iPad Mini, sporting an 8-inch 1,024 x 768 pix res IPS panel, but missing the mark completely on weight and thickness (440 grams and 9.9 mm vs. 312 grams and 7.2 mm).
As for the 101 Platinum, if I’m to be completely frank, I don’t really get its “deal”, since it’s slightly bigger and bulkier than the 97b HD, but features a sub-par 1,280 x 800 screen. Oh, well, at least the thing is dirt-cheap, going for $270. Not that its cousins are extravagantly priced, costing $200 (the 8-inch flavor) and $300 (the iPad doppelganger).

Moving away from the displays and designs, the members of the new Platinum trio are eerily similar, packing the same exact 1.6 GHz quad-core Rockchip processors, 8 GB of on-board storage (bummer), 2 MP rear cams, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD and mini HDMI.
The only differences worth noting are the 8-incher uses only 1 gig of RAM (vs. 2 each for the larger tabs) and the 9.7-incher features a 2 MP secondary snapper, whereas the other two have modest 0.3 MP cams slapped on their front. Who wants one and which?
