Catalyst 8.8 under Crossfire particularly fast? KonKorT Aug 4th, 08, 08:30 AM #1

Catalyst 8.8 under Crossfire particularly fast?

Quote:
It looks like the next Catalyst, named 8.8, is very fast in Crossfire. It shall run very well with AMD's new graphic card HD 4870 X2.
Besides AMD shall integrate the safe mode powerplay 2.0.

Now this is really good news. Crossfire did not scale that well for the past few versions of Catalyst. Any numbers out yet?

Crossfire has been scaling better and better for the past half year. No great news there. What IS great though is the powerplay. Do they mean it will be implemented for all ATI 4000 cards, or just the X2?

I'm pretty sure all HD 4000 cards, seems logical enough

Its not "new". It isn't implemented in software for the 4000 series. It basically powers down parts of the GPU that are not being used to save energy and reduce heat dissipation. ATI set the low fan speeds in the BIOS of current cards counting on this feature to keep temps in control.

I tried the beta and saw nothing new. Powerplay wise that is. Maybe i have the wrong picture here, but what i expect from powerplay, is for the core to drop at 100mhz or so, when idle.Just like my 3650.

After the 8.8 beta, the core still runs at 500mhz at idle!

Am i waiting for the wrong thing?
