AMD Phenom II X4 overclocks to 6GHz newzhunter Nov 21st, 08, 10:13 AM #1 (permalink)

AMD decided to takes things in its own hands during an event in Austin, Texas. It took the unreleased Phenom II, based on the quad-core Deneb architecture, and slapped a pot suitable for exotic on it. After lowering the temperature to -185°C and raising the voltage to somewhere north of 1.9V the processor was able to move north of 6GHz. We don't know the exact frequency. At this time this is actually higher than what Nehalem can do.

No cameras were allowed so there are no pictures available. In a recent slide AMD claimed that up to 4GHz is more than possible with Deneb and while we're not certain this is telling the whole truth, you should not be surprised if you find more than a fair share of Phenom II models running at 3.6GHz and above 24/7.

Is that ACC i see?

Hmm if this is true i may have to rethink my preaching to potential AMD users to go for modest budget to mid end 780G/790GX mobo and maybe aim for the uber offerings by DFI, MSI, etc

Pardon me, if carmeras were not allowed, then why they got that pic there?

But hey, the recent i7 could achieve 5.7Ghz, could post but couldn't go further. I wonder @ 6Ghz it could get into OS...

I love to hear about OC potential of the new AMD processors. I love to hear about Intel's too, but having AMD catching up, is better for the market. Hopefully the whole i7+X58+DDR3 prices will fall, upon the release of the Denebs.

would be interesting to buy some stuff by the end of Q1 '09, and with some refreshments from Ati and Nvidia even more...

At 6GHz we might actually be able to play Supreme Commander with an AI-X at decent fps.

Hmmm, my q6600 at 3.6 and 4870x2 gives less than suitable fps in supcom and esp. FA, so I think you're right.
