Biostar: Deneb on the cheap? batuchka Nov 24th, 08, 09:20 AM #1 (permalink)
Hi all!!!! More fruits to share with you as a result of my 'curious cat' nature with regards to current hardware Been corresponding with Biostar after seeing BIOS releases for MSI and Gigabyte AM2+ mobos that allowed for Deneb/Heka to run on em. Thanks to Steve of Biostar for promptly replying to my email: thumbs up for the great news!

Hi
MSI and now Gigabyte have released announcements that their 770/780g/790gx
chipsets would have BIOS updates in oder to support Heka/Deneb. I have been
an avid Biostar user: is Biostar releasing BIOS to follow suit? Thank you

Current Biostar AM2+ users advised not to update BIOS if system working perfectly fine and only do so when AM3/Deneb out and wish to slot em in

AMD's AM2/AM2+ motherboards seem to have great upgrade ability. Looks like they learned their lesson after 939.
Is AM2+ the "Slot 1" of the future?

From what you're saying, an am2+ board is compatible with a am3 cpu?

Yes as AM3 cpus can run with DDR2 on AM2+ mobos and DDR3 on AM3 mobos but i can only speculate the performace gains (if any) on running those chips with DDR3/AM3 hehe

There are no significant real world gains going from DDR2 to DDR3 as of yet. Not until apps take advantage of the extra bandwidth...

It was the same situation in going from late DDR to early DDR2. No point.

The real gains in phenom 2 will come from its extra L3 cache and some architectural tweaks.

AMD screwed themselves with Socket 939. If AMD would have just added a DDR2 memory controller back in 2004 to Socket 939's when they were released then Socket 939's would still be around today.

Good to see that AMD learned their lesson back then with their socket 939 to 940 change. In fact, I think its pretty tactical to offer the same processor running on both DDR2 and 3 since DDR2 is still very stable and cheap at the moment. DDR3 is fast, but like someone already pointed out that not alot of apps is able to make use of the extra bandwidth at the moment.

AMD already announced that AM3 CPU will work on AM2+ boards more than a year or even 2 years ago. That is why there is a + after AM2, AMD already plan for that a long time ago.....

Its only whether the board makers will update the bios for their boards, Biostar seldom update their bios unlike asus and gigabyte.

I was wondering if a mosfet mod is possible to enable higher power draw. A number of people are having their mosfet pop after oc-ing the biostar 790GX mobo with the 9950 BE.
I know a heatsink over the mosfet will solve the prob but.... a mosfet mod might still sound nice, you know, like the op-amp mod on sound cards. Theoritically possible...

I own an older TA770 with SB600 - would this get a BIOS update like its SB700 version?
Also what about Biostar non T Series like GF8100 and GF8200? Thanks and
this is good news for Biostar fans!
