Too expensive IMO, if its going to cost that much it better beat the Q9550 or atleast be very very close in performance
But I'm sure the relatively high price is due to the 6MB of L3 cache, that stuff doesn't cheap

P45 mobo+Q9550 vs 790GX+ Phenom 2 920
Prices are close....

I hope that 920 can be competitive with the Q9450/Q9400 and 940 to Q9550/Q9650 because if its not, then AMD will show that its still a little behind.

Phenom II with its 6MB of L3 cache would cost less to make than a current Phenom with 2MB of L3 cache. Going from 65-nm to 45-nm is a pretty massive decrease in terms of die size, and all AMD really did with "Deneb" is increase the L3 cache (along with some very small architectural tweaks).

But I agree with you on the price. I personally think that a 3.00GHz "Deneb" should cost the same or less than a Core i7 920. It might be able to equal or even beat the Core i7 920 in gaming performance, but it would most definitely lose to it in everything else (due to the huge advantage that Hyper-Threading gives Intel).
Apple MacBook Pro (2009 Model)
- 15.4" LED-Backlit Glossy LCD Display (1440x900 Resolution)
- Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (2.53GHz, 3MB Shared L2 Cache)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU (256MB Shared Memory)
- 4GB (2GB x 2) DDR3-1066 Memory
- 250GB Hard Disk Drive (5400 RPM)
- Mac OS X "Snow Leopard" (v10.6.2)

I 2 expected lower prices but i guess its just the starting price that will go down even in the first few days of the launch...
but its still a good price for a top-of-the-line CPU with amazing oc potencial..im not worried, the chip is cheaper to make, so this isnt the final price.

I think well have to judge its price once we know its performance. Plus the 790gx mobos are at least $40 cheaper than X58.

initial release prices are always high because of the small size of these initial batches. this is what happens when people complain about delays, small supply and high premium.

Shouldn't we comparing Deneb with i7? Those 2 are closer to each other than Penryn. Comparing Phenom II 940 to Q9650 is an unfair comparison. Why? Take memory management as the reference.

No way its a unfair comparison. Remember, AMD is behind Intel in CPU tech like 6-12 months, so it makes sense to compare it to intels older 45nm. AMD just got to 45nm ffs lol.

Why would it be a unfair comparison now all of a sudden? Especially when people been comparing phenoms to core2s all this time, the phenom 2s aren't much different, just more L3 cache and some architectural tweaks...

For heaven's sake! Phenom II hasn't even been launched, has it? Of course the price is wacky! It'll come down when they launch it and maybe more afterward.

You shouldn't be comparing by timeline. You should be comparing by architecture. i7 has a memory controller within the processor. AMD has had it all the while. That's why i7's performance in games is somewhat disappointing as compared to the previous offerings.

The prices should be in AUD since it is an Australian website. Phenom II 940 will be US$356.65 while the 920 is US$316.12.
