velociraptor only advertise 126mb/s sustained rate, this 1 boast a 160mb/s sustained rate.
Dun just look at pure advertised specs... Anyway its from Seagate I serioulsy doubt the reliability of the drive, I heard too much about Seagate HDD dying... And they have also reduced their warranty, this give me some sort of affirmation...

From benchy alone from this unknow jap website, it still didnt win Veloci... The average read of WDC VR is still slightly higher with only 1/2 the seek time, not to mention lesser noise and power consumption...

WDC benchy from review as far as I rmb is

HD tune 3.0 for Read

Max: 113mb/s
Average: 100.9mb/s
Min: 77mb/s

Seek time: 7.1ms

Write is also awefully close, with average about 97mb/s iirc...

like that, if bang for buck... lets say 1 velociraptor 300gb cost 4x the price of a 500gb 7200.12, then we raid it with Raid 5, we still get 1tb at a faster speed than veloci... but then waste space...

"Why we should not touch Seagate" is actually much more than just that firmware issue.

7200.12 will be faster than raptor at boot if it can reach 160mb/s sustained.

raptor will have the computer slightly more responsive.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB Drive Review (ST3500410AS)
http://www.xcpus.com/GetDoc.aspx?doc=123&page=1

ST3500410AS vs ST3500418AS
Quote:
We wanted to make a note about 7200.12 model numbers, since this has generated quite a bit of confusion in our forums and other enthusiast forums. We found it strange that after having the 410AS model out for around a month Seagate also released the 418AS model with nearly identical specifications (the only real difference being acoustic performance). We contacted Seagate many times about this, and the following is the most up-to-date information we can provide you with.

The 410AS model adheres to industry standard "low halogen" specs and thus is more environmentally friendly than 418AS. The 410AS model also produces less noise than the 418AS model. That's about all we know, and to date Seagate has done little to distinguish these models from each other in their marketing material, which is odd.
