Phenom II X3 is unlockable to X4 (WTF???) bl4ckdr4g00n Feb 23rd, 09, 03:19 PM #1

Phenom II X3 710

Mobo: Biostar TA790GX (they said you can use any 790GX + SB700 mobo to unlock)

Go to BIOS, modify Advance Clock Calibration to Auto

that's all
now save the BIOS, restart and wait to see the magic...

Prime95: Stable

Before and after unlocking

and now we get almost 1000 pts CPU score in 3Dmark 06

I didn't think this was even possible. I thought the other core was completely defunct, not revivable...

My question is how stable is the 4th core considering AMD disables one core in the X3's if they find it as unstable.

Hope they can run orthos / superprime to see if the "unlocked" core will cause computation errors.

I remember the days of the 360KB floppy drives. You could then format the 360KB floppy into a 700KB. If you try to format it as 1.2MB, you will find random errors.

Anyway, it is worth a try. However, if we are to oc, this 4th core may be the Achilles heel. Maybe 3 cores would give better oc results

I think most probably the 4th core is a workable and good core but not complied to the spec, thus AMD had to disable it.

For all we know this is an ES and hence not retail versions which are properly disabled.
