Exclusive: AMD-ATi will launch Radeon HD 4890 in April 6th SeniorEditor Mar 1st, 09, 03:50 AM #1

Exclusive: AMD-ATi will launch Radeon HD 4890 in April 6th. AMD-ATi Radeon HD 4890 is just a 'super clocked' 4870, still 55nm manufacturing process and same architecture just faster clocks. Clock speeds are yet to be decided but problably comes with 850 gpu and 3600MHz (maybe 3900MHz?) memory frequencies. Currently launch date of HD 4890 is April 6th.

More details;
DH Özel: ATi Radeon HD 4890 6 Nisan'da geliyor

I personally doubt that this new card will have the same chip as the 4870.I mean after 9 months since the launch of the 4870, they come up with an overclocked card.....!
The RV770 is a small chip compared to N-vidia's g200b.Adding some more processing units wouldn't hurt at all. Unless... AMD has managed to increase the computing efficiency of the RV770.

It's been said before that it won't have the same chip. Same based architecture of course but using a different 55nm process.

It'll just be a tweaked RV770 core. Pretty much the same type of revision the R350 -> R360 was back in the Radeon 9800 days. Not that that is a bad thing considering that there is a 20% boost in core speed.

I'm also impressed that AMD is actually sticking to a reasonable naming convention here.

I am pretty curious about this card. A lot has been said. In all fairness, maybe we shouldn't be expecting too much. I mean if rv790 brings another 400 shaders along, what would we expect from rv870?

The thing is, that no matter how i see it, the rv790 with the current rumors is a bad move. If it's just overclocked, it's a bad move and if it would be much more powerfull it would still be "just" DX10.1 capable. Why ATI would release a beast so soon before Windows 7 that are rumored for September now?

Now if Windows Seven comes in December 2010 or January 2011, then ATI should do their best and release a beast of a chip and an X2 card too!

It's all down to Microsoft i guess!

Maybe the rv790 is the "Black Edition" that was rumoured a long time ago. The rv870, should be a whole new architecture.

This sort of card sure looks like my next one...
Of course, only if it comes out soon enough.

Also, just because Windows 7 might be comming out in September, that doesn't mean that the DirectX 11 API will too, as stated by some Microsoft representatives as well I believe... (not to mention the games/apps using it...).

I really hope AMD will address the power consumption, especially the IDLE power draw. It remains the biggest grief with RV770 for me.

If all they do is just fix the idle power draw, I'd call it a success.

I've taken the power draw on idle into my own hands. running 250mhz core 250mhz mem on idle. save abt 30w on idle. tried running 1.1v instead @ that speed. only shave off another 8-9w or so

The high idle power draw is actually due to the high voltage and high frequency at idle. If you know how to use RBE, its really easy to edit the bios to create a low power draw at idle card yourself.
