Yes, because it is a whopping 5-Watts above what the PCI Express x16 slot can provide. Everyone should be grateful it has the external power connector: can you say, massive overclocking potential?

Here's a good question: Which will perform better, three Radeon HD 4770 cards in CrossFireX, or a single GeForce GTX 285 (which would actually still cost more)???

i might be wrong, but i thought pcie 2.0 is 150w?

3 4770 should.
2 4770 should offer similar performance to the 285.
The 285 might cost more then 3 4770, but then again if you want to factor in the extra cost for a board that supports 3 slots, it might be different.
