Delayed until October or not, the Lynnfield (Core i5) are closing in which means more details about them are also popping up. Manufactured using the mature 45nm process, Intel's first Socket 1156 processors are said to be the 2.66, 2.8 and 2.93 GHz-clocked Core i5 models. These processors will all feature four cores and an integrated dual-channel DDR3 memory controller (providing DDR3-1066/1333 support), 8MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 95W.

According to reports, the upcoming 2.66, 2.8 and 2.93 GHz chips will have support for the Turbo Boost technology which will enable single-core overclocks of up to 3.2, 3.46 and 3.6 GHz respectively. In terms of prices, the CPUs would go for $196, $284 and $562, with the cheapest part, the 2.66 MHz model, set to not include features like Hyper Threading, vPro and TXT, which will be found on the 2.8 and 2.93 GHz Lynnfields. Shortly after releasing these three processors, Intel is expected to deliver its first 32nm CPUs.

It sounds funny how Core i7 940 2.93GHz costs that $560 at this moment and i7 940 should be slightly faster. Of course power consumption is better in this i5 2.93GHz (TDP goes from 130W -> 95W)

This happens when there's no real competition.

28 USD / 20€ per month, unlimited transfers

Core i7 940 is being replaced by 950 model with 95-Watt TDP sometime soon. Intel said last year that they would transition the mainstream Core i7 lineup (920, 940, and newer models) to a 95-Watt TDP sometime in Q2 2009, and as far as I know, that is still the plan. The Xeon 5500 series should be proof of that: the Xeon X5570, at the same 2.93GHz as the Core i7 940, has a 95-Watt TDP.

One thing I don't like is disabling Hyper-Threading on the 2.66GHz model. Dumping vPro and Intel TXT makes sense (the Core 2 Quad Q8000 series also does not support those), but Hyper-Threading? Say it ain't so Intel!
Apple MacBook Pro (2009 Model)
- 15.4" LED-Backlit Glossy LCD Display (1440x900 Resolution)
- Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (2.53GHz, 3MB Shared L2 Cache)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU (256MB Shared Memory)
- 4GB (2GB x 2) DDR3-1066 Memory
- 250GB Hard Disk Drive (5400 RPM)
- Mac OS X "Snow Leopard" (v10.6.2)
