To squeeze nVidia to release their next generation cards first......lol

LOL.............

Can't even fulfill the 4770 demand and now 4790.....Hope AMD will get rid of the supply issues first before releasing newer model using 40nm

I think it is a typo in the article and they actually meant 4890.

I have my doubts that this will be 40nm. Firstly, the supply of 40nm chip for HD4770 is so limited that we only get to see a few sets at any point in time. Secondly, a 40nm chip with 800sp and 256bit mem bandwidth will be a direct competition to its HD4870 and highest end HD4890, since it should be more overclockable that the former, and possible to clock close to a stock HD4890. At the price point that this new card will be, it will make the prices of those in the higher end series look like a joke. Lastly, they will have to spend time and resources redesigning the RV770 in order to shrink it to 40nm from the current 55nm.

One more thing. If this piece of news is true, then the naming is really weird cause performance will def be better than a HD4850. And ATI is shooting themselves in the foot cause when Palit was gonna slap GDDR5 onto their non reference, they were pretty much against it. And now, they are doing the same thing and naming it as a lower end chip than the HD4850. May be they can call it HD4860?

There's only two ways I can think of this making sense. First is if this card is actually based on the RV770 GPU and is intended to consume low-yielding RV770s after the cancellation of the 4850, or after the release of 40nm DX11 parts.

The second way this could work is if the RV790 GPU is intended to replace RV770 entirely, perhaps holding the mid-range segment until the release of the 5670.

The specs listed for the RV790 above would give it processing throughput exactly identical to the 4770, but memory bandwidth very similar to the 4870. The 256-bit memory bus itself doesn't make any sense, unless it's needed to absorb 128mbit (I think my math is right here) GDDR5 chips that would have been used on 4870 512MBs, that are now using 256mbit chips instead for 1GB total memory.

Basically, I think either the specs are wrong or this is going to be a very niche card like the Radeon HD 4830, used to absorb GPUs and memory chips that aren't needed elsewhere.
