N. Islands – The next Radeon generation KonKorT Nov 1st, 09, 09:26 PM #1 (permalink)
AMD's upcoming graphic generation will be named N. Islands instead of Evergreeen. Besides the graphic chips will be manufactured in 32 instead of 40 nanometres, feature DirectX 11 and UVD 3.0.

English: N. Islands – The next Radeon generation

Deutsch: Kommende Radeon-Generation heißt N. Islands

I would have hoped for DX13 or 14 by then.

32nm? I thought that AMD would completely skip the 32nm and jump straight to 28nm! At least that's what I've heard.

Anyway, AMD could have more sales if they named their gpus after porn stars. Female porn stars! Bring on the dual gpu Lolo Ferrari bitches!

I pointed out in another thread that Globalfoundries' 28-nm HKMG process will only enter early risk production in Q4 2010. Since it is EXTREMELY likely that AMD will move their GPU production to Globalfoundies for their next architecture, it would be impossible for them to skip 32-nm and go straight to 28-nm unless they wanted to take an entire year off.

What I expect to see is the "Northern Islands" series, which remember is a brand-new architecture (the first since R600), come out in 2H 2010 on Globalfoundies 32-nm HKMG process. Then in 2H 2011 a 28-nm die-shrink/enhancement of the "Northern Islands" architecture.

There will likely a transition period where certain products are made at TSMC and others as Global Foundries. The real question is what future products are going to be made where. I do think that the next wave of GPU's from AMD are going to be respins of the current Radeon 5770 and 5890 for lower power consumption and higher clock speed. I think AMD is wise enough to try moving manufacturers and introducing a new architecture simultaneously. Then again, any new architecture has probably been in various stages of development for the past couple of years....

Agreed that AMD would likely move some GPU production to Global Foundries. However, I think AMD will position Global Foundries as a specialist for SOI (silicon on insulator) process used for AMD CPUs and IBM chips rather than the traditional silicon process.

So in other for that to happen, ATI needs to familiarize itself with SOI; which brings up cost but could potentially bring down power consumption significantly. I don't see this happening with North Islands, likely a later generation.

I just read a post in Fudzilla that suggests, that ATI will indeed manufacture it's next gen at 28nm process! Of course your opinion has a higher value for me than Fudzilla's, but it wouldn't be bad to keep this info in mind.

I knew I had heard that before!

Yeah, I read that article. Fudzilla mentions a Q4 2010 release as well. Like I said, Globalfoundries' 28-nm process will only enter early risk production in Q4 next year. You know how bad the shortages are with the 40-nm Radeon HD 5000 series? It would be about 10 times worse if AMD were to release a 28-nm card in Q4 2010 exclusively from Globafoundries. Now, Fudzilla does say that AMD will use both TSMC and Globalfoundries for their 28-nm lineup. This does make more sense. TSMC's 28-nm process is supposed to be in full production in 2H 2010; but then again, their 40-nm process is in "full production" right now and you can see how well that is going.

To me though, especially with the shortage situation right now at TSMC, it would make the most sense to go exclusively to Globalfoundries next year and use their 32-nm process. Globalfoundries's 32-nm HKMG process will enter early risk production in Q1 2010, with full production starting in Q3 2010. AMD could release their next-generation GPU architecture in either Q3 or Q4 with what I would assume to be very good yields. They would also get better prices from Globalfoundries, as they would easily become their biggest customer of the bulk silicon process.
